SU Takes Brief Lead but Can't Hold Off Gents

SHREVEPORT, LA -- 11th-ranked Centenary rallied from a 5-3 deficit to score a 10-6 win in the opening game of a three-game set with Schreiner Baseball on Friday evening.
The Mountaineers scored the game's first run only to fall behind in the second inning. Then, using a four-run third inning, took a brief lead again only to see the Gents rally and then pull away.
A pair of two-out walks and sophomore Tomas Garcia's single gave SU the first inning

Now behind 3-1 entering the third inning, sophomore Ben Benavides led off with a single and junior Sam Pistrui doubled. Freshman Reece Hohhertz' single scored both runners and Garcia reach based on a Centenary error. Freshman George Elliott's groundout scored Hohhertz and Garcia scored on freshman Josh Gilliam's sacrifice fly to make it 5-3.
The Gents countered with four runs of the their own in the bottom of the third off of Hammack and kept adding runs to pull away.
Sophomore Derek Gonzales pitched well in relief, going three innings without allowing a hit. Sophomore Hudson Valenti had two of SU's seven hits.
The teams square off for a Saturday doubleheader starting at 1:00 pm in Shreveport.
