Mountaineers Rally Late for Walk-Off Win, Split

KERRVILLE, TX -- Trailing 7-4 in the bottom of the sixth in Tuesday's second game of the day with visiting Huston-Tillotson, Schreiner rallied for two runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh to score a come-from-behind 9-8 walk-off win. The Mountaineers were edged in the first game, 5-4.
Junior Sam Pistrui went 3-for-3 with three runs scored in the second game to spark SU. His triple in the first inning scored junior Ricky Canales and then he came home on sophomore Tomas Garcia's sacrifice fly to get Schreiner on top, 2-0. It was a 4-4 game in the top of the fifth when the Rams scored twice to take the lead. Another run in sixth set up the Mountaineer rally.
Garcia's double scored the first run in the sixth and then he scored on freshman Ryan Hohhertz' single. After the Rams added another run in the seventh, lead off walks by junior Trevor Wren and sophomore Osman Quintana and a single by sophomore Ben Benavides loaded the bases. A hit batter and an error led to the three run rally that clinched the win. The victory went to junior Kyle Baird who pitched the seventh inning.
In the earlier game, the Mountaineers scored four times in the second but couldn't hold the lead. Schreiner to two hits each from Canales, Hohhertz, freshmen Josh Gilliam and Sammy Garcia. Sophomore Derek Gonzales was charged with the loss.
The Mountaineers close their season with a three-game series this weekend against Dallas. On Saturday, before the first pitch at noon will be a field naming ceremony for former SU head coach Robert Henry. The teams will then play a doubleheader on the newly named Henry Field.
