Mountaineers Sweep Pair of Nail Biters at
Southwestern
Late-game
heroics were the story of the weekend for the
Mountaineers as Schreiner swept a pair of
exciting games at Southwestern.
In Saturday's game, SU pitchers Chris Armijo and
Chase Kimball combined to scatter 9 hits and
held the home team to only one run in 10
innings. With the scored tied 1-1 in the
top of the tenth, the Mountaineers (5-1) plated
three runs to earn the 4-1 extra-innings win.
Armijo followed up his opening day, one-run
effort with another strong performance. He
allowed a run in the fourth and only seven hits
in eight innings of work. Despite his
performance, the Mountaineers still trailed 1-0
but evened the score with a run in the ninth and
that set the stage for the tenth-inning heroics.
J.D. Escobar had the big hit in the 10th,
driving a single through the left side of the
infield with the bases-loaded and two outs.
Kimball pitched the final two innings and earned
his first win.
Sunday's game was a back-and-forth affair.
Southwestern (0-2) jumped to a 3-0 lead after
two innings. Schreiner scored two runs in
both the third and eighth innings to take a
short-lived 4-3 but the Pirates answered with
two of their own in the bottom of the eighth.
Down 5-4 in the top of the ninth, Schreiner
scored two runs to gain the exciting 6-5
come-from-behind win. Johnny Huizar and
J.D. Escobar had the RBI singles that led to the
winning rally. Kevin Jones pitched two
innings of no-hit ball for his second win on the
young season. Jeremiah Kester and Jordan
Anders each had two hits on the day.
