Cable's Long, Short Shots Propel SU Comeback
Schreiner
Baseball's impressive turnaround continued with
a 9-7 come-from-behind win over Austin College
in wind-swept Kerrville. The win improved
the Mountaineers record to 6-1 on the year.
The windy conditions led to eight errors between
the two teams, and were a large reason that SU
trailed 6-1 going into the bottom of the fifth
inning. In that inning though, the
Mountaineers strung three straight singles to
load the bases. With two outs, Chase
Kimball hit a double to the fence that plated
one run and Thomas Cable followed with a long
two-run homer to shave Austin's lead to 6-5.
In the bottom of the seventh, it was again Cable
who came up with a big hit. Again with two
outs, he hit a flair into right field that
broke the tie and Jordan Anders followed with a
two run double that gave Schreiner a 9-6 lead.
Chris Armijo (2-0)
had his third consecutive strong start, this
time going seven-plus
innings and allowing only two earned runs.
In the eighth, he gave up two quick hits and
gave way to Kevin Jones. Jones battled out
of the jam, allowing only an unearned run, and
then set down the Austin side in order in the
ninth for his first save of the season. In
two innings, Jones didn't allow a hit and struck
out three batters.
Schreiner pounded out 14 hits in the game, led
by three each from Jeremiah Kester, Kimball and
Cable. Kimball and Kester each had three
RBI and Anders added two.
