11 Run 7th Inning Leads SU to Sweep of Dallas
Schreiner trailed 17-3 going into the bottom of
the fifth inning but rallied to an improbable
20-19 win in the bottom of the seventh to win
game one of a doubleheader. The
Mountaineers then scored seven runs in each of
the first two innings of game #2 and held off
visiting University of Dallas, 15-9, to complete
the sweep.
The Mountaineers (9-1) started their game one
rally with four runs in the fifth and added two
in the sixth but still trailed, 19-9. In
their last at-bat, SU scored 11 runs without an
out to earn the exciting win. Thomas Cable
(1-0) got the win in relief. Ray Martinez
was 3-for-4 with 5 RBI while Jeremiah Kester
continued his hot hitting, going 2-for-4, with
four runs scored and 3 RBI. Oliver
Stogsdill and Richard Sanchez also each had 2
hits and 3 RBI for SU. Cable went four
innings and gave up 4 earned runs.
In game two, Schreiner turned the tables and
jumped out to a 14-2 lead. UD came up with
seven runs in the sixth inning to make the game
interesting. Kester was even better in the
second game, going 5-for-5, scoring twice and
driving in 3 runs. Colton Hermes (3-0) got
the win, pitching 5-1/3 innings.
Both teams were
punished by extremely windy conditions that saw
routine pop flies turn into home runs. The
wind contributed to the two teams combining for
25 errors in the doubleheader.
