Jones Pitches Mountaineers to Sweep of UTPB
Junior
right hander Kevin Jones pitched 8-2/3 innings
of one run baseball to give Schreiner a 3-1 win
and a three-game sweep of visiting UTPB.
Jones (1-0) carried a five hit shutout into the
ninth. Reliever Chase Kimball pitched the
final out for his first save of the season.
Jones' performance mirrored his teammates
pitching superlatives from Friday. In the
series, SU pitchers allowed five earned runs in
23 innings.
The series finale was a pitching duel.
There was no score going into the bottom of the
fifth. In Schreiner's half of the inning,
SU was able to scratch out an unearned run to
get a 1-0 edge. That was how the score
stood going into the bottom of the eighth, when
the Mountaineers (3-0) added two insurance runs.
Kimball, Thomas Cable and Richard Sanchez got
the hits that produced the two runs.
Jones gave up six hits, struck out four and
walked two.
