Hermes Throws Another Gem, Earns Split for SU
Freshman Colton Hermes is SU's hottest pitcher
and his latest sterling performance rescued the
Mountaineers and earned a split with CUA.
Hermes (5-0) pitched eight shutout innings,
allowing only four hits, but that almost wasn't
enough. It took a Thomas Cable single in
the bottom of the eighth inning to finally break
a scoreless tie and give Schreiner a 1-0 win.
In game two, Concordia-Austin's (10-9, 2-1 in
ASC) Ethan Morrison shutout the Mountaineers
(13-5, 1-2 in ASC) for a 7-0 win.
Schreiner could only manage five hits through
seven innings of the first game. In the
top of the eighth, CUA nearly took the lead.
Freshman Eric Crenwelge retrieved a single to
the fence. His throw to senior
catcher Jordan Anders got the runner for the
third out. In the bottom of the eighth, it
was CUA's turn to throw out a runner at the
plate. Sophomore Johnny Huizar started the
inning with a single. He moved up on a
sacrifice bunt. After senior Jeremiah
Kester was intentionally walked, Crenwelge
singled but the CUA right fielder threw out
Huizar at the plate. Cable was next to bat
and his single plated Kester with the winning
run.In
the second game, Concordia-Austin roughed up SU
starter Kevin Jones (2-2) for four earned runs
in less than two innings of work. Morrison
scattered four Mountaineer hits. |
