Howard Payne Shuts Down SU Bats for Sweep
Howard Payne
completed a three-game sweep of the Mountaineers
by scores of 5-3, 14-3 and 5-3. In
Friday's series opener, Howard Payne got an
early lead with four runs in the second inning.
Schreiner tried to rally and cut the deficit to
two after scoring twice in the seventh inning
but that was as close as SU could get.
Chris Armijo
(3-2) took the loss.
Eric Wehmeyer
relieved Armijo in the second inning and pitched
6-1/3 innings while allowing only one run.
In the first game of Saturday's doubleheader,
Schreiner scored in the first, but HPU quickly
tied the score. The game started to get
away from SU starter
Colton Hermes
(5-1) when Howard Payne scored four runs in the
fourth to make it 5-1. HPU broke the game
open in the sixth inning by scoring 8 times off
three Schreiner relievers.
In the finale, Schreiner carried a 2-0 lead into
the sixth inning as
Kevin Jones
(2-4) was in command. Over the next two
innings, Howard Payne (10-10, 4-2 in ASC) got to
SU for five runs and the Mountaineers (13-8, 1-5
in ASC) couldn't mount a successful comeback.
Jeremiah Kester
and
Ray Martinez
led the Mountaineers offense with four hits each
during the series. |
