Pena's Three-Hitter Earns SU Split at UTPB
Bernard Pena
wasn't perfect this time, but he was more than
good enough to shutout NCAA Division II
UT-Permian Basin and earn a 1-0 win and
doubleheader split. Schreiner lost the
first game of the twin bill, 13-1.
In the opener, the Mountaineers (14-9) opened
the scoring in the second inning but UTPB (6-17)
answered back with three runs in the third and
another four in the fourth off of
Eric Wehmeyer
(0-2). UT-Permian Basin continued the
onslaught with another five runs in the fifth to
end all doubt.
Johnny Huizar
had the lone RBI for SU.
In the second game, it was all about pitching.
Pena (2-0) went 5-2/3 innings allowing only
three hits, three walks and two strikeouts.
Kevin Jones was
impressive again in relief and earned his second
save by going 1-1/3 innings without allowing a
baserunner. SU scored the only run of the
game in the top of the seventh inning.
With two outs,
Chase Kimball
was hit by a pitch.
Justin Smith
reached on an error. Huizar was also hit
by a pitch to load the bases.
Jeremiah Kester,
who had four hits on the day, drove in the lone
run with a single.
The two teams could only manage a total of seven
hits in the second game. |
