Jones' Two-Hitter Carries SU to Sweep of SRS
Schreiner took a big step towards getting back
into the ASC race with a pair of victories over
Sul Ross State. The Mountaineers (16-9,
3-5 in ASC) won the first game, 10-4, and then
rode the two-hit complete game effort of
Kevin Jones for
a 6-0 win in game #2.
In the first game, SU jumped on top of visiting
Sul Ross State (5-19, 0-8 in ASC) for four runs
in the first inning and added another in the
second. SU starter
Colton Hermes
(6-1) ran into trouble in the top of the third
as the Lobos scored four runs (two unearned) to
make things interesting. Schreiner got
another run in the third and added four big runs
in the fourth to break the game open.
The big hit came on a bases-clearing, three-run
double by
Matt Langston.
Langston was 3-for-4 with 3 RBI.
Jeremiah Kester
and
Eric Crenwelge
each had two hits as the top of the Mountaineer
order had seven of the team's 9 hits.
In game two, Schreiner again took the lead, this
time 3-0, in the first inning - and as it turned
out, that would be more offense than Jones
needed as he dominated the Lobos throughout.
SU added a run in the sixth and two more in the
eighth to end any thoughts of an SRS comeback.
Jones pitched all nine innings and raised his
season record to 4-3. In addition to only
allowing two hits, he struck out four.
Kester again had two hits to pace the offense.
Johnny Huizar
(3 RBI) and
Jordan Anders
(2 RBI) also had a pair of hits.
