HSU Out-Slugs Schreiner for 3-Game Sweep
Hardin-Simmons
broke out of its slump at the expense of
Schreiner's pitching staff. In a
three-game sweep of the visiting Mountaineers,
the Cowboys scored 40 runs.
In the series opener, the Mountaineers jumped
out to a 5-2 lead and still maintained a 7-4
lead going into the bottom of the sixth.
The Cowboys scored two in the sixth and another
in the seventh to tie the game and force extra
innings. HSU got to SU relievers
Chase Kimball
(1-2) and
Chris Armijo
and scored the winnings runs in a 10-7 win.
In game two, Schreiner took a brief 5-0 lead in
the third only to allow the Cowboys six runs in
their half of the inning. The lead would
go back and forth and the game would again go to
extra innings. SU broke an 8-8 tie in the
top of the eighth with two runs. Again,
HSU rallied (this time, against
A.J. Mann, 0-1)
for three in the bottom of the inning to get the
walk-off win, 11-10.
In the series
finale, HSU took a big early lead, 7-0, against
Eric Wehmeyer
(1-3). The Mountaineers (17-13, 4-8 in
ASC) got six of the runs back in the top of the
fourth only to give up that many runs to
Hardin-Simmons in the bottom of the fourth.
SU mounted a late rally but it was too little,
too late as SU fell, 19-15.
Matt Langston
led the offensive attack with five hits and six
RBI. Kimball had four hits while
Johnny Huizar
(5 RBI),
Ray Martinez,
Jordan Anders
(5 RBI) and
Thomas Cable (5
RBI) also had three hits in the series.
