Wehmeyer Does Double Duty as Schreiner Sweeps
Schreiner scored two runs in the bottom of the
ninth inning to earn a thrilling 4-3
come-from-behind win over visiting McMurry.
That win combined with a 8-7 win in the opening
game, earned a doubleheader sweep for the
Mountaineers.
In the opener, Schreiner got the initial jump
with two runs in the first inning but McMurry
answered back and briefly took the lead with
three runs in the third. The Mountaineer
offense gave starting pitcher
Colton Hermes
(7-1) just enough breathing room by scoring six
runs in their half of the third to take an 8-3
lead. McMurry (17-14, 8-6 in ASC) kept the
pressure on by getting two runs each in the
fourth and sixth innings but
Eric Wehmeyer
came in and shutout the visitors in the seventh
to earn his first collegiate save.
Jeremiah Kester
had the big hit for Schreiner (19-13, 6-8 in
ASC) in that six run third with a three-run
triple, while
Thomas Cable,
Matt Tomasello
and
Richard Sanchez
each had two hits.
In the second
game, McMurry scored twice in the third off
Kevin Jones to
take a 2-1 lead but SU tied the game in the
fourth. McMurry untied the game in the
fifth on an unearned run which set the stage for
the late game heroics. In Schreiner's half
of the ninth,
Ray Martinez
led off with a single. One out later,
Matt Langston
was hit by a pitch. Cable got a single to
load the bases and Tomasello hit his
game-winning two-run single to end the 4-3
comeback win. Wehmeyer (2-3) earned the
win in relief by throwing five shutout innings.
Jones pitched four innings giving up two earned
runs while scattering ten hits. Tomasello
and Cable again had two hits to pace the offense
and were matched by
Chase Kimball
and Martinez. |
