Past Schreiner in Home Opener, 14-13
Visiting East Texas Baptist withstood a 10-run
inning by Schreiner and rallied for a 14-13 win
in SU's home opener Friday afternoon. The
game was the first of a three-game series with
the two teams playing a doubleheader on Saturday
afternoon.
ETBU (4-0) scored four first inning runs off
Mountaineer starter Colton Hermes on four hits.
Hermes settled down and shutout East Texas
Baptist by scattering five hits over the next
four innings. Schreiner (0-4) plated
single runs in both the second on J.D. Escobar's
ground out RBI and in the fourth on senior
Oliver Stogsdill's home run. Junior Eric
Wehmeyer (0-1) relieved in the sixth inning and
was charged with five runs (four earned) over
this two innings of work and ETBU took a 10-2
lead into the seventh inning. ETBU picked
up another run to extend the lead to 11-2 before
SU erupted in their half of the seventh.
In the seventh, Schreiner scored 10 runs on five
hits and two errors. The big blow of the
inning was a three run homer by senior Ray
Martinez. By the end of the seventh, SU
led 12-11. Wehmeyer gave up hits to the
first two batters of the eight inning, including
the tying run, and was replaced by freshman
Korey Rose. Rose got the first two outs
but surrendered a single to ETBU's Jeremy
Phillips which scored the eventual game winner.
ETBU added a run in the ninth and Schreiner also
pushed one run across but couldn't tie the game.
Sophomore Oscar Ibieta got three hits in five
at-bats and scored three times for the
Mountaineers. Martinez added a double to
his three-run bomb in six at-bats. Junior
Justin Garza and Stogsdill also had two hits
each. |
