Ibieta's
Double Brings Home Winning Run in 10th, 6-5
Photo: Freshman Korey Rose picked up
his third win already in 2009 vs. Wabash.
Sophomore Oscar Ibieta drove home the winning
run in the bottom of the 10th to give freshman
reliever Korey Rose and Schreiner (9-9) a 6-5
win over Wabash College in non-conference action
Tuesday. Rose (3-1) threw 2-1/3 innings of
shutout, two-hit relief to keep SU tied, giving
Ibieta the chance to win it in the 10th and
Ibieta delivered.
Wabash (3-4) scored the first run off sophomore
starter J.P. Garcia in the first inning for a
1-0 lead but SU took the lead in the bottom of
the third. Ibieta started the inning with
a walk. Senior Oliver Stogsdill followed
with a single. Freshman Eric Bukowski also
walked to load the bases with nobody out.
Senior A.J. Mann hit into a double play, but
Ibieta scored on the play to tie the score.
Freshman Jesse Tijerina's single scored
Stogsdill to put the Mountaineers ahead.
Garcia was roughed up for three runs in the
fourth on four hits to put Wabash back in front,
4-2. In the SU fifth, walks again were
Schreiner's friend. Bukowski walked to
start the inning, followed by a double by Mann.
Tijerina walked to again load the bases with no
outs. Freshman Roger Chavez scored two
runs on a fielder's choice to tie the game.
Garcia gave up another run in the seventh but SU
answered back in the bottom of the inning.
Mann's double and Chavez' RBI single brought
that run home. Garcia gave way to Michael
Houser in the eighth and Rose replaced Houser
without allowing a run, setting up the late-game
heroics.
Schreiner returns to ASC action this weekend
when the Mountaineers host Sul Ross State.
The games have been moved to Saturday and Sunday
because of weather.
