Mountaineers Split First Two Games of Series at
HSU
Schreiner won the first game of Saturday's
doubleheader, 4-2, to bounce back from a
difficult come-from-behind Hardin-Simmons' win
on Friday night. After Schreiner had
scored five times in the top of the ninth to
take a 11-10 lead on Friday, HSU hit two solo
home runs to pull out the win in the their half
for the 12-11 win.
No details were available about the first game
Saturday other than the final score.
In Friday's game, HSU (4-4 in ASC) scored a run
in the first. Schreiner (6-2 in ASC)
answered with two runs in the top of the second.
Senior Oliver Stogsdill reached base on a
single. With two outs, senior A.J. Mann
hit a home run to give the Mountaineers the
lead. The Cowboys tied the game in the
bottom of the third and scored four times off
senior starter Roger Ayala in the fourth to take
a 6-2 lead.
In the fifth, Schreiner battled back. Mann
walked to start things. Senior Richard
Sanchez singled. Junior J.D. Escobar
doubled which scored both Mann and Sanchez and
Escobar scored on an error by the catcher.
HSU took a 7-5 lead with a run in the bottom of
the inning on a home run by Taylor Berlin.
Schreiner cut the lead in half in the top of the
seventh with consecutive two-out singles by
Escobar, senior Ray Martinez and freshman Marcus
Myhaver.
HSU's J.T. Armstrong hit a two-run homer in the
bottom of the seventh to make it 9-6.
Ayala gave way at the end of the seventh.
During his stint, he gave up eight earned runs
on 10 hits, struck out five and only walked one.
Junior Eric Wehmeyer can in in the eighth and
gave up a home run to Mike Morgan to make it
10-6. As they have shown all year,
Schreiner wouldn't quit. Escobar was the
first Mountaineer to get on base and Martinez
reached on an error, and Escobar scored on the
play. Down to their last out, sophomore
Oscar Ibieta walked and Stogsdill was hit by a
pitch to load the bases. Junior Joe Andrew
Pena unloaded them with a dramatic grand slam to
put SU in front by one.
In the bottom of the ninth, Matt Roam homered to
tie the game and Armstrong hit his second homer
of the game for the walk-off win. Weymeyer
took the loss (0-2)
