Mountaineer Update

from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
September 17, 2007

After two weeks of traveling for our fall sports teams, Volleyball and our two Soccer teams return to the friendly confines of Schreiner this week for home contests. Volleyball hosts Concordia-Texas tomorrow (Tuesday) night at 7 pm in Edington Gym. Both soccer team's host UMHB and Howard Payne on Friday and Saturday afternoon. We invite the entire campus community to come out and support your Mountaineers. Attendance is FREE for SU students, faculty and staff. We do ask that all SU fans recognize and join in with the NCAA and American Southwest Conference's Sportsmanship initiative and treat our opponents and their fans with respect while supporting our Mountaineers. Here's a quick look back at last week's matches and a schedule of the week ahead:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Last Week's Results:

MEN'S SOCCER (1-2-1 overall, 0-1-1 in ASC): Tied, 1-1, at McMurry and lost, 2-3, at Hardin-Simmons. It was a tough weekend in Abilene. In the match vs. McMurry, Schreiner had the edge in shots and chances, but couldn't break the tie. Senior Tino Albarran scored the lone goal vs. McMurry and senior Travis Curd had both goals vs. Hardin-Simmons. The Mountaineers look to get back on track this weekend with a pair of home matches.

WOMEN'S SOCCER (1-2-1 overall, 0-2-1 in ASC): Tied, 0-0, at McMurry and lost, 0-5, at Hardin-Simmons. Like the SU men, SU's women's team also had a statistical edge vs. McMurry but couldn't hit the back of the net. Hardin-Simmons, a perennial national powerhouse, controlled the match in its win vs. Schreiner. Kari Kriegel recorded her second shutout of the year in the tie with McMurry.

VOLLEYBALL (4-4 overall, 1-1 in ASC): Won at Sul Ross State, 3-0. It was payback time for Schreiner. Last year, SU lost at Sul Ross State, 3-0, in the season finale which cost the Mountaineers a spot in the ASC Tournament. This year, Schreiner earned some measure of redemption with a 3-0 win at SRS - but it wasn't easy. Xandria White and Caitlin Gayle led the offensive attack with Julie Peddy recorded 35 assists.
