Mountaineer Update

from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
April 16, 2008

First, congratulations to the members of the Schreiner Men's Tennis team and head coach Lee Jennings for qualifying for the 2008 ASC Championships which begin this Friday in Tyler. The Mountaineers won a three-way tiebreaker to advance to the championships and face Mississippi College in the first round on Friday morning. Good luck SU Men's Tennis!

Softball starts a home series here at Mountaineer Field on Friday with Sul Ross State. Here's a quick rundown on what has taken place over the past week or so and a schedule for the next several days:

MEN'S TENNIS: won their final ASC match, 6-3, vs. Howard Payne. That match ended up being the deciding factor that propelled SU into the playoffs. All six Mountaineers contributed to the big win, including seniors Brent Coleman, Riley Winterringer and Josh Schumann who all played their final home matches yesterday. If SU wins on Friday, the Mountaineers advance to face nationally-ranked Hardin-Simmons on Saturday morning.

WOMEN'S TENNIS: lost their final ASC match to HPU, 2-7. Freshman Alicia Wilbanks won at #3 singles and SU's #1 doubles team of sophomore Katrina Priess and freshman Michelle Martinez won their match. Schreiner was hindered because the team only had four available players. Yesterday was senior Tina Philippi's final home match.

BASEBALL: won two of three games this past weekend vs. Texas Lutheran. Won the series opener, 12-8 and won the middle game, 5-4, on junior Richard Sanchez's RBI single in the bottom of the seventh. Dropped the series finale, 13-8. With one weekend remaining in the season, SU at 8-10 in the ASC, is still one of six ASC West teams battling for the three playoff spots. The Mountaineers travel to Concordia for a key series starting Friday.

MEN'S GOLF: finished fourth at the LeTourneau Spring Classic. Sophomore Kyle Grona finished 4th individually and shot the second best score of the tournament, a 71 in the third round. Freshman Jay Chapman finished in 10th place individually and both players qualified for the ASC Championships.

WOMEN'S GOLF: freshman Liz Calderon finished in 10th place overall, and sophomore Surraya Minhas finished in 12th at the LeTourneau Spring Classic. Both players qualified for the ASC Championships and will begin competition this Monday.
