Mountaineer Update

from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
December 12, 2008

We wish all SU students great success on your finals. Even though it's finals week, there are still home basketball games this weekend. Take a study break and come out and see your Mountaineers in action both Saturday and Sunday afternoon. Here's a quick recap from last week and a schedule of the games ahead going into the holiday break.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Lost both games during a long road trip to Louisiana College and Mississippi College. The Mountaineer continue to try to find some consistency and therefore lost both games during the road trip. Against LC, fell behind by 12 points by halftime and could only make up one point on the margin in the second half. On the positive side, SU controlled the rebounding contest, 43-33. Schreiner was undone by a 21-10 deficit in turnovers and could only shoot 1-19 from three point range. Against a much better Mississippi College squad, SU played one of its best games, but still lost by 14. Again, SU was behind by double digits at halftime. This game, it was the Mountaineers who were dominated on the glass, 46-29. Schreiner did a much better job managing turnovers, but still could only shoot 35% from the field for the game. Junior Ralph Turner and freshman Trevor Conner led the way in scoring for SU, each averaging about 14 points during the trip.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Also lost both games on the road trip. Turnovers continue to be a big problem for Schreiner. SU lost the ball 65 times in the two games, which led to big losses. In both games, most of the turnovers came in the first half, which led to insurmountable leads for the opponent by halftime. Senior Monica Enriquez continues to post impressive stats, and scored 19 points in each game. On the plus side, Schreiner is playing a lot of freshmen who are getting a lot of quality minutes so this should allow the players to adjust to the college game more quickly and should mean better things are ahead as the season progresses.
