Mountaineer Update

from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
January 30, 2008

The Schreiner Men's and Women's Basketball teams enter the wraparound week and then begin the final third of the season. This week, both teams host UMHB and then travel to Concordia on Saturday and then flip the sites next week. Thursday's game will mark the end of the "Change for Change" fund raising contest between Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) teams from each ASC member school. SAAC members will be collecting change at the games which go towards the benefit of the Doyle Community Center in Kerrville. Both teams are trying to end small losing skids. Also, it's opening week for SU Baseball as the team travels to Midland this weekend.

Here's a quick look back and a schedule for the next week:

Men's Basketball (0-2 last week): The Mountaineers continue to struggle with injuries. As a result, SU has basically employed a lineup of freshmen and sophomores. During last week's games, only three minutes were logged (combined) by non-underclassmen. SU is taking it's lumps with the young lineup as evidenced by losses to both McMurry and Hardin-Simmons. Freshman Riley Battle is emerging as a second scoring threat - with leading scorer Ronnie Barney out with an injury - and averaged 17 points in the two games last week.

Women's Basketball (0-2 last week): Schreiner took (NCAA) 8th-ranked McMurry down to the wire but ran out of gas in the closing minutes. The Mountaineers had a lead as late as five minutes remaining and put a big scare into the ASC West leaders. SU didn't fare quite as well in its home game with Hardin-Simmons and the Cowgirls took control early and never let go. Junior Monica Enriquez had a particularly strong game vs. McM with 25 points, seven assists, six rebounds and four steals.
