Mountaineer Update

from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
March 28, 2008

All of our spring teams will be busy over the coming week. Coming out of Spring Break, we have a lot of contests that took place since the last MU. Softball and our Tennis teams are here on campus competing today. Here's a quick look at the recent contests for our teams:

BASEBALL: beat Sul Ross in two of three games, swept a doubleheader from Cardinal Stritch and took two of three games from Hardin-Simmons. The Mountaineers have found much more success now that the team has hit its important game (ASC contests). In last weekend's action, Schreiner pitchers were the story of the weekend, particularly on Saturday. SU's Kevin Jones, A.J. Mann and Chris Armijo held HSU to only five hits in a doubleheader sweep. Jones only allowed one hit in a complete game 4-1 win. Mann was particularly effective, throwing three innings on one-hit relief in shutting out the Cowboys. In the bottom of the 10th inning, he led off with a walk-off home run to help his cause and earn the victory.

SOFTBALL: split four games with Hardin-Simmons, lost all four games at Concordia, won 1-of-3 games in Arizona. The SU Softball team had a solid weekend in splitting four games with 2X defending ASC champion HSU. The team struggled in Austin in losing the series. In two of the four contests, Schreiner had big last inning leads but couldn't hold off the Tornadoes.

MEN'S GOLF: finished 4th out of 9 teams at the TLU/Concan Classic, including third out of 6 ASC teams. Despite difficult conditions and weather problems, Schreiner rallied on the second day to move up two spots, passing Hardin-Simmons and McMurry to finish 4th. Sophomore Kyle Grona and freshman Jacob Torres tied for low honors on the first day with 79's. Freshman Steven Bell had one of the lowest rounds on Day #2 with a 76 to lead the Mountaineers. Grona finished 12th overall, while Torres and Bell tied for 14th place.

MEN'S TENNIS: beat Southwestern, 6-3. Schreiner's doubles teams were the key to victory as SU swept all three matches vs. visiting Southwestern. Sophomores Carlo Sasam and Ben Jackson and senior Josh Schumann each won both their matches. Sasam and Jackson won at #2 doubles convincingly, 8-1. Sasam then won at #1 singles in three sets, 5-7, 6-0, 6-2. Schumann (#3 singles) and Jackson (#5) won in straight sets.

WOMEN'S TENNIS: lost to Southwestern 1-8. Freshman Alicia Wilbanks won, 6-2, 6-2, at #5 singles to earn Schreiner's point. Sophomore Katrina Priess lost a three set match at #1 singles, 4-6, 6-4, 2-6.
