Mountaineer Update

from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
October 17, 2008

This will be another very busy weekend for Schreiner Athletics. Volleyball is playing at the 2nd ASC Crossover Tournament (3 matches), while both Schreiner Soccer teams will be hosting two ASC rivals this weekend, which also happens to be Parents' Weekend. Both Cross Country teams will be racing Saturday morning in Georgetown and both Golf teams begin competition at Scott Schreiner in the first SU Fall Classic. In addition, both Basketball teams have now begun practices for what both teams expect to be exciting seasons. There's a lot going on so please come out and support your Schreiner teams if you get the chance.

Here's a quick update on last week's action:

VOLLEYBALL: won at Concordia-Texas, 3-1. After a slight break in the middle of the season, the SU Volleyball team avenged an earlier home loss by winning at CTX. SU (7-5 in ASC West, t-3rd place) lost the first game but won the final three. Senior Xandria White had her best match since returning from injury and the Mountaineers dominated at the net with 11 team blocks. Tiffany Miller and Caitlin Gayle to both be among the ASC leaders in attack percentage.

MEN'S SOCCER: won at Concordia-Texas, 2-1, lost at UT-Tyler, 3-0. The Mountaineers ran their streaked of undefeated matches to three in the CTX match with the win. As always, SU's defense was its grounding point. Schreiner scored the first two goals and gave up a late goal to make the last few moments interesting. Freshman Phillip Anderson and sophomore Juan Bonilla scored the Mountaineer goals. Against one of the ASC's top teams, UT-Tyler, SU fell behind early and wasn't able to score to get back into the match.

WOMEN'S SOCCER: lost at Concordia-Texas and at UT-Tyler. Schreiner continues to have a tough time due to injuries. Those Mountaineers healthy enough to play are just barely enough to field a starting unit. Playing two matches in two days is particularly tough on our ladies as they don't have any substitutes to give the starters a break.
