Mountaineer Update

from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
October 23, 2008

It will be quiet on campus this weekend as no Schreiner teams will be competing at home. The Soccer teams are on the road and the Cross Country teams will be competing at the ASC Championships. The Golf teams leave for their final fall tournament this Sunday. Here is an update on recent results by the Mountaineer teams:

VOLLEYBALL: went 2-1 at ASC Crossover Tournament. Lost to Howard Payne, 3-1, on Senior Night. Schreiner won the opening match of the ASC Crossover vs. UT-Tyler, 3-1. Then lost to UT-Dallas by the same score. On the second day, SU knocked off the host school, Mary Hardin-Baylor, 3-0. In the final home match for SU seniors Marissa Stearns, Malorie Westerholm, Xandria White and Libby Howard, Schreiner won the first game 32-30, but then lost the next three games in front of a loud and large crowd in Edington. The loss, combined with McMurry's win over Hardin-Simmons, gives McM a commanding lead for the final playoff spot.

MEN'S GOLF: shot the best tournament scores in many years at the first Schreiner Fall Classic. The team shot a first round 299 which was the first sub-300 round shot at least since 2004 and then did 10 shots better on the final day with a 289. #3-ranked UT-Tyler won the tournament but only beat SU by 5 shots on the final day as SU moved up to finish 3rd. SU was second out of 5 ASC schools. Individually, SU players had a host of personal bests. Junior Kyle Grona matched his tournament best in the first round with a 71. Freshman Jay Ray shot the best round in recent memory and a personal best with a 70 in the second round. Sophomore Jacob Torres shot his collegiate best round of 72 in the second round. Junior Brent Stanford shot his best round, a 77, in the first round and then shot even better, a 74, in the second. Freshman Mark Salazar shot his best score of 75 on the second day. Grona and sophomore Jay Chapman tied for 10th place individually.

WOMEN'S GOLF: shot a school-record 329 in the second round but it wasn't good enough to overcome a difficult first round as SU finished fourth. Sophomore Kattie Spencer shot a school-record 76 in the second round. Junior Surraya Minhas shot an 81 in the second round and finished 11th individually. Spencer was one shot back in 13th place. Freshman MaryFrancis Benning shot her best collegiate round, 90, in the second round. Freshman Rylie Pankratz, playing as a medalist, also shot her best collegiate round - on the first day.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY: Despite running on the toughest course the team has seen this year, and after two weeks of particularly tough practices, all but one of the team members had a personal best at the Southwestern Invitational. The Mountaineers finished 5th as a team and goes into this weekend's ASC Championships looking to crack the top half of the conference. Freshmen Peter Cerda (30:15) and Victor Hernandez (30:53) led SU, followed closely by sophomore Michael Maia (31:23) and two more freshmen, Dionel Alves (31:33) and Ryan Maia (32:01) over the 8,000 meter course. Freshman Francisco Avila also had his best time of the year.

MEN'S SOCCER: played two more tough matches, these against two of the top-ranked ASC teams, and held second half leads before falling. On Friday, SU came back and took a 2-1 and 3-2 lead in the second half against UT-Dallas but lost in OT, 4-3. Against Ozarks the next day, the Mountaineers took a 1-0 second half lead and then became a man up on a UO red card, but lost 2-1. Freshman Phillip Anderson had three goals in Friday's match. Adam Harvey scored SU's lone goal on Saturday.

WOMEN'S SOCCER: played one of the ASC's best teams, UT-Dallas, tough on Friday. The pesky Mountaineers, now finally starting to get some of their injured players back, proved tough to put down in a 3-0 loss to the perennial ASC heavyweight Lady Comets. On Saturday, Ozarks scored an early first-half goal and that was all the scoring in a tough 1-0 loss for Schreiner.
