It's the final weekend for our fall sports teams and all will be in action. Men's and Women's Soccer will be home today and tomorrow with tomorrow's matches being the final ones for Schreiner seniors Stephanie Crane, Susan Burger, Alcie Rivera, Jeremy Reinhard, Brad Baker and Nick Morrison. We hope you can come out and support the seniors and soccer teams this weekend. The SU Cross Country teams will be competing at the ASC Championships tomorrow in Seguin (this time I got the date right). Also, this will be your first chance to see the SU Men's Basketball team as the squad plays the Alumni Game this Saturday at 9 am.
Here's a quick update on last week's action:
MEN'S SOCCER: won at Louisiana College, 2-0, and tied Mississippi College, 0-0. Schreiner's defense was strong again last weekend, posting back-to-back shutouts. Freshman goalkeeper Matt Johnson picked up his second and third shutouts of the season. Johnson had 22 saves in the two matches. Friday, the SU defense held the most potent offense in the ASC scoreless in a persistent rain shower in Mississippi. On Saturday, the match was tied 0-0 at halftime but goals by freshmen Adam Harvey (assist to Johnson) and Rudy Moreno (unassisted) put the match away. SU hosts the best and worst teams in the ASC this weekend to close out the season.
WOMEN'S SOCCER: tied Louisiana College, 0-0, and lost at Mississippi, 5-0. Although Schreiner dominated the Louisiana College match, the Mountaineers couldn't score and had to settle for a 0-0 tie on the road. In the MC match, SU fell behind 4-0 in the first half against one of the ASC's top teams. This weekend, SU hosts Hardin-Simmons, the #1 team in the ASC, on Friday, and McMurry on Saturday. McMurry is ranked last in the ASC and offers a chance for Schreiner to end the season on a winning note. With a win on Saturday, SU, despite struggling all season with injuries and a depleted bench, could finish the season in 12th place which would match last year's finish.
WOMEN'S GOLF: finished in 3rd place at the Lady Bulldog Invitational. Only one ASC team finished ahead of Schreiner. Junior Surraya Minhas matched her career low of 78 in the final round and helped SU move up one spot in the standings. In the first round, sophomore Kattie Spencer shot the fifth-best score of the round - an 83 - in very windy and cool conditions to lead SU. Minhas finished 5th overall in the field and Spencer finished 16th. Schreiner finished its fall season ranked #3 in the ASC but should have a shot at the ASC championship next semester if the team can work hard over the off-season.
MEN'S GOLF: despite finishing 10th at the John Bohmann Invitational, Schreiner's men's team completed a solid fall season. Junior Kyle Grona was SU's top finisher in each round. He finished 35th overall. Sophomore Jacob Torres was second among the Mountaineers and junior Brent Stanford continued his strong play by finishing third. SU, despite shooting much better scores than it has in the past several years, will still have it's work cut out for it in the spring. The ASC now boasts five of the top 26 teams in the nation and doesn't have much falloff throughout the rest of the conference after that. Playing in easily the toughest conference in the nation for men's golf can not be an excuse because the team should be stronger in the spring with two players returning who were not available this fall.
