Mountaineer Update

Hurricane Ike has caused changes in this weekend's schedules. Volleyball and Soccer matches have been cancelled, and the golf teams' first tournament has been postponed. Still, Women's Soccer opens ASC play today at Mountaineer Field and Volleyball plays two matches in Georgetown tomorrow. Here's a quick update of the last week's results and a shortened schedule of events for the next week. Whatever your plans over the coming days, we hope you and your families are safe as Ike makes his unwelcomed arrival in Texas.

VOLLEYBALL: SU had a difficult time at the Augsburg Invitational but the field was extremely tough, with three teams in the NCAA top 20 rankings. Schreiner matched up well statistically against the nationally-proven programs. In the fourth match of the trip, SU battled back from a 0-2 game deficit to force a deciding game, but was edged 15-13 in game 5. The Mountaineers (3-4, 1-0 in ASC) bounced back strong in their ASC opener. SU roared back from a 25-23 loss in game 1 to crush Sul Ross State 25-12, 25-20 and 25-13 in the final three games. Caitlin Gayle and Tiffany Miller provided the power as both had attack percentages above .400 for the match.

MEN'S SOCCER: Schreiner dropped a pair of close matches to NCAA Division II UT-Permian Basin (0-2) and NAIA Huston-Tillotson, 2-1. Despite the losses to scholarship programs, the Mountaineers look to be improved this fall. Schreiner's strong defense, a staple under head coach Paul Hayes, looks to have returned in 2008. Despite playing many young players, the Mountaineers have held their own against higher division competition and look forward to beginning ASC play next week.

WOMEN'S SOCCER: SU lost two home matches against scholarship competition, falling 1-5 to NCAA II Texas A&M International and NAIA Huston-Tillotson, 1-2, in double overtime. Like the men, new head coach Wayne Hinkley has gotten improved play this fall and the team has been very competitive against scholarship teams. Scoring goals for SU were Kaitlyn Moore and Alyssa Fordyce. SU is still trying to overcome a rash of minors injuries and hopes to start getting healthy next week.

MEN'S TENNIS: Ben Jackson beat teammate Jacob Chesnut in the consolation bracket of the men's open division of the Kerrville Adult Open. Jackson and Chesnut then teamed in doubles to win the competition. Trey Hernandez and Dan Okland both won in the round of 16 in singles but lost in the quarterfinals.
