Mountaineer Update

from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
April 16, 2009

The Men's and Women's Tennis teams wrapped up their seasons yesterday, but there is still plenty of activity this weekend. Not only are the Softball and Baseball teams involved with important series that could go a long way towards determining their post-season chances, but our Volleyball and Men's and Women's Soccer teams have their one date of competition in the "non-traditional" season on Saturday as well. Add to that, that the Women's and Men's Golf teams will play in the ASC Championships on Monday and Tuesday and so it is a busy time for the Mountaineers. We will have a number of "Senior Days" over the coming week. This week either was or will be the last home contests for Stephanie Reed (Women's Tennis), Ray Martinez (Baseball), Oliver Stogsdill (BB), A.J. Mann (BB), Roger Ayala (BB) and Richard Sanchez (BB). Brent Stanford also could be ending his collegiate career this week as a member of the Men's Golf team. Congratulations to sophomore Michelle Martinez for being named ASC Women's Tennis Player of the Week for this past week's action.

Here's a quick recap and look towards the week ahead:

WOMEN'S TENNIS: lost it's three matches to conclude the season. Lost at top-ranked Hardin-Simmons, lost a close match at McMurry, 5-4, and lost it's season-ending match vs. Division II St. Mary's. Notching wins vs. McMurry were sophomore Michelle Martinez (#1 singles), sophomore Andrea Da Silva (#3) and freshman Lynne Collenback (#4) and the team of Martinez and Reed won their match at #1 doubles. Schreiner finished the season with a 1-5 ASC record.

MEN'S TENNIS: lost it's three final matches of the season to Hardin-Simmons, McMurry and St. Mary's. Like the women's team, the SU Men finished 1-5 in ASC play. Look for both teams to have a major infusion of new players to go with those returning next year as head coach Garry Nadebaum enters his second season and first recruiting class.

BASEBALL: went 0-4 in games with ASC leading Texas Lutheran and in a non-conference game at Trinity. The losses were somewhat similar in that Schreiner had leads in three of the four games but couldn't avoid the opponent's rallies each time. The Mountaineers are 7-11 in ASC contests entering the final weekend of action. SU hosts Concordia-Texas this Saturday and Sunday (games pushed back due to weather concerns). CTX is one game ahead of SU in the standings and in fifth place. Both teams are another game back of fourth place Mary Hardin-Baylor so SU needs some help as well to make the ASC postseason tournament (top four teams advance).
