Mountaineer Update

from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
April 29, 2009

Congratulations to Schreiner Softball!

In case you weren't aware, Schreiner took three of four games in their series with visiting Texas Lutheran last weekend. With the wins, Schreiner claimed the #3 spot in the ASC West Division and locked up the program's first appearance in the ASC Softball Championship tournament since 2003. With the wins, the 2009 Schreiner Softball team also set records for the number of wins in season (26) and the number of ASC wins in a season (15). Schreiner (26-13 overall, 15-9 in ASC) travels tonight to the ASC Tournament and plays tomorrow in its first round game against the nation's #3-ranked team, Louisiana College, at 6:00 pm. Here's some information so that the campus community can follow the team in their games at the tournament. This information is also on the SU Softball website.

Also, congratulations to Lyndsie Travis for being the fourth Schreiner Softball player to earn ASC West Division Player of the Week honors. She was 8-for-12 against TLU, with a home run, four doubles and 7 RBI as SU won by scores of 9-2, 1-1, 13-0 and lost the third game 1-4.

Regardless of the outcome of the first game, Schreiner will play its second game on Friday, May 1. With a win over Louisiana College in the opener, SU would play West Division #1 seed Hardin-Simmons at 11 am. Should Schreiner lose to the #3 ranked team in the nation, the Mountaineers would play either #1 ranked East Texas Baptist or the loser of the Howard Payne/#6 ranked UT-Tyler game.

This is a double elimination tournament. Three of the nation's top six ranked teams are in the six team field. The tournament winner earns the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
