Mountaineer Update

from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
February 18, 2009

This is the final week of the regular season for Schreiner's basketball teams and the men's team has a lot on the line with two home games and a chance to claim the final spot in the ASC Tournament. As you'll see in the schedule below, Schreiner basketball has a doubleheader both Thursday evening and Saturday afternoon in Edington Center. Saturday's games will be especially bittersweet as it will be Senior Day and the final game for Monica Enriquez and Xandria White. Enriquez will undoubtedly be known as one of the best basketball players to ever wear a Schreiner uniform. Both games are very important for the men's team and it'll be your final two chances to thank Monica (and X) for their contributions throughout their careers. Here's a quick look back at last week's action and a schedule for the next week.

SOFTBALL: swept a doubleheader at Trinity by the scores of 6-3 and 5-3. Schreiner jumped on TU early and the first game and was in control throughout. Trinity tried to mount a rally but it was too little, too late. In the second game, SU took the lead in the fifth and never looked back. Schreiner never trailed in the doubleheader. Freshman Becca Hay and senior Patsy Toman eached picked up complete game victories. Seniors Lyndsie Travis and Sarah Trevino as well as Hay each had three hits.

BASEBALL: won one of three games vs. ETBU this weekend. Lost 14-13, won 7-6 and lost 9-8. The Mountaineers had a wild weekend series with ETBU that featured three one-run games. In the first game, SU scored 10 runs in the 7th inning to take a brief lead but lost in the 9th. In the second game, SU rallied in its final at-bat thanks to a clutch hit by senior Ray Martinez, and A.J. Mann picked up the save. In the finale, SU couldn't hold an early lead as ETBU rallied for the win.

WOMEN'S GOLF: Schreiner finished 3rd in its own tournament out of 7 teams. The only two teams to beat SU were two scholarship programs. In the final round, SU beat three of the four scholarship teams in the field. Sophomore Liz Calderon had her best tournament of her collegiate career, shooting 82, 85 on the tough Comanche Trace course to finish 6th individually. Junior Surraya Minhas was 9th.

MEN'S GOLF: The Mountaineers didn't play great but still finished fourth out of eight teams in its own tournament. NCAA Division I UT-Pan American won the event at Comanche Trace. Freshman Jared Cornish, playing his first tournament (he was injured in the fall), finished ninth overall after shooting 81-76. Junior Kyle Grona was 14th and sophomore Jay Chapman was one stroke back in 19th.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: senior Monica Enriquez went over 1,500 points for her career as Schreiner surprised visiting Concordia, 52-49. SU also lost at UMHB. Enriquez averaged just over 20 points per game during the week.

WOMEN'S TENNIS: won at UT-Dallas, 5-4 and lost at nationally-ranked UT-Tyler, 9-0. Sophomores Michelle Martinez (#1) and Alicia Wilbanks (#3) won their matches as did freshman Lynne Collenback (#4). 57-year old Kathy Bryson played her first match as a Mountaineer. Martinez and senior Stephanie Reed also won at #1 doubles.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: lost two games last week to fall behind in the race for the final playoff spot. SU is in a four-way tie for fifth but only the top four teams advance. Schreiner needs to win each of its final two home games to have a chance to claim that spot. Junior Ralph Turner and sophomore Riley Battle combined for 59 points in the 96-91 home loss to Concordia.

MEN'S TENNIS: lost matches at UT-Dallas and nationally-ranked UT-Tyler by identical 9-0 scores. This is a new Mountaineer team as only Danny Okland returns from last year and SU has no juniors or seniors on the roster.
