Mountaineer Update

from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
March 18, 2009

Knowing that (almost) everyone is on Spring Break, I still wanted to keep you updated on some very good news that's been happening over the past several days on campus. In addition, Schreiner Softball (finally) gets to play its first home games of the year, here this Friday evening and Saturday. The schedule for the upcoming games are listed below. SU Baseball did not get to go on a Spring Break trip afterall, because weather pushed back this past weekend's series with Sul Ross State. Fortunately, the Mountaineers went undefeated and now are leading the ASC West standings. The SU Softball team is on its Spring Break trip to AZ and is currently 4-0 with two games remaining. The second game today is against the #1-ranked team in the nation (and defending national champions) Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Last but hardly least, congratulations to junior starting pitcher Colton Hermes (Baseball) and sophomore Daniel Okland (Men's Tennis) for each being named ASC Players of the Week.

Here's a quick recap of last week's action:

BASEBALL: went 4-0 last week. Defeated Wabash in non-conference action, 6-5. Then swept a weekend series with Sul Ross State by 6-5, 13-0 and 4-3 scores. The first and last games of the series were the latest examples of SU's late game heroics. The Mountaineers trailed 5-2 going into the last inning but scored four times to rally for the win. Freshman Eric Bukowski drove in the winning run. In the series finale, it was senior Ray Martinez who came up with the clutch hit after the Lobos scored two runs in the top of the ninth to tie the game. Martinez' double scored junior Eric Crenwelge and made a winner of SU starter Matt Valley. Senior Roger Ayala and junior Colton Hermes also pitched strong outings for SU. Hermes worked eight innings of shutout pitching, striking out 11 to earn ASC honors. SU currently leads the ASC West (after being picked to finish 7th out of 8 teams in the ASC preseason poll of coaches) with a 5-1 record.

SOFTBALL: went 4-0 so far during spring break trip to Tucson. Schreiner defeated Wisconsin-Platteville, 13-5, to start the trip and then beat Amherst, 10-2. On the second day, SU posted shutouts of both Edgewood (9-0) and Mount Mary (25-0). Freshman Becca Hay and senior Patsy Toman each have two wins so far on the trip. Schreiner has averaged more than 14 runs per game and nearly 13 hits each outing. No game has gone more than 5 innings during the trip as SU has "mercy ruled" each opponent. Schreiner is now 11-2 on the year and begins ASC divisional play this Friday and Saturday vs. Concordia-Texas. The Mountaineers only losses have come to #3-ranked UT-Tyler and #19-ranked East Texas Baptist. Although historical records are tough to find, it appears that this may be the best start (11-2) to an SU Softball season in the program's history. Schreiner also was picked to finish seventh in the ASC West this year.

MEN'S TENNIS: lost 3-6 to Austin College last Friday. Okland won his match at #2 singles as did sophomore Tory Manchester (#4) and freshman Jesse McKinney (#6). Manchester and McKinney won in straight sets, while Okland went to a third set before putting his opponent away. SU couldn't overcome a slow start in doubles play.

WOMEN'S TENNIS: lost 3-6 to Austin College last Friday. Sophomores Andrea Da Silva and Alicia Wilbanks cruised at #2 doubles but SU still trailed 2-1 after doubles action. Da Silva won again at #3 singles in straight sets while freshman Lynne Collenback crushed her opponent at #5 singles.
