Mountaineer Update

from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
March 26, 2009

It will be another busy weekend for SU's teams and that will continue into early next week as all of our spring teams will be in action. The only home contests this weekend are SU Baseball hosting McMurry on Friday and Saturday afternoons. Here's a quick recap of action from the past week:

SOFTBALL: won 3-of-4 games vs. Concordia-Texas. Won both games of Friday's doubleheader, 7-0, and 5-3. Split Saturday's games, losing 10-0 and winning 11-5. SU is now 3-1 in ASC play, 14-5 overall. The most consistent part of the weekend was first inning scoring by the Mountaineers. Schreiner scored all seven of it's runs in the first game in that first inning, and four of their five runs in the second game. In the series finale, SU scored early again, helped by a 2-run homer by senior Lyndsie Travis to take a 3-0 lead and then added to the lead throughout. SU was up 9-1 before a small CTX rally made it closer but never threatened. Senior Patsy Toman (7-2) picked up two of the three wins during the series. Travis leads the team in batting at .448 as well as homers (4) and RBI (25). Freshman Rachel Herzog is next in batting average at .417 followed by another freshman, Becca Hay at .391 and senior Sarah Trevino at .386.

BASEBALL: won 1-of-3 games at Hardin-Simmons this past weekend. Lost at heartbreaker on Friday night, 12-11, won the opener of a Saturday doubleheader, 4-2, and lost the second game that day, 6-4. SU is in a tie for first place in the ASC West with a 6-3 record. Reigning ASC Pitcher of the Week, junior Colton Hermes threw another strong game, holding HSU to two runs on six hits with 9 strikeouts. Freshman Korey Rose got his first collegiate save, pitching a perfect final inning to preserve the win - and striking out two. Despite pounding out 14 hits in the series finale, SU could only score 4 runs. Seniors Richard Sanchez (.435) and Ray Martinez (.400) lead the team in batting. Hermes leads the starting pitchers in ERA at 5.45 and senior A.J. Mann leads all pitchers with an ERA of 4.50.

MEN'S TENNIS: lost 9-0 to NCAA Division II St. Mary's yesterday. The most successful teams for SU in the match was at #3 doubles (Jacob Chesnut/Stephen Franklin) who came us just short at 8-5 and freshman Trey Hernandez at #1 singles. SU is 1-0 in ASC play and 2-8 overall.

WOMEN'S TENNIS: lost 9-0 to NCAA Division II St. Mary's yesterday. SU's most successful teams were at #1 doubles where sophomores Michelle Martinez and Andrea Da Silva were edged out 8-6. Da Silva dropped a close singles match at #3, falling 7-5, 6-4. SU is 0-1 in ASC play and 2-8 overall.
