Mountaineer Update

from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
November 19, 2009

Sorry for the delay in sending this out. As you know, our fall sports season ended with the Men's Soccer team's semifinal loss to #1 seed, UMHB, on their home field, 1-0, two weeks ago. It was a strong performance buy an unfortunate end to a great soccer season for the Mountaineers. During the time since my last writing, post season awards have been given out for both soccer teams and volleyball. Here's a quick update of the results of the awards and a quick mention that the Schreiner Men's Basketball team opens its home schedule this Saturday vs. Trinity in Edington Gym at 6:00 pm. The women will open their home schedule in early Dec and are in San Antonio this weekend playing OLLU and Huston-Tillotson.

MEN'S SOCCER: defeated #5 ranked Howard Payne, 3-0, in the quarterfinals of the ASC Championship Tournament, then lost to UMHB in the semis. It was the second time in the program's history (in the ASC) where the Mountaineers won a tournament match and the third time that SU has played in the semifinals of the ASC tournament since 2005. Sophomore Adam Harvey scored a pair of goals and Tanner Overstake got SU on the board with the eventual game winner. Yet another sophomore, Matt Johnson, recorded his fifth shutout of the season in the match. In a very tight and closely contested semifinal match, UMHB got the game winner midway through the first half and SU couldn't manage an equalizer and absorbed the tough loss. Still, SU's 8-4-3 record was the best since 2006 and Schreiner doesn't have a senior on the roster. Harvey and Johnson each earned All-Tournament and junior Derek Brosky (second team All-ASC), Johnson (3rd team All ASC), Overstake (honorable mention All ASC) and sophomore LeAnthony Bosserman (honorable mention All ASC) earned all conference honors.

VOLLEYBALL: senior Tiffany Miller became the first Mountaineer player since Melanie Biggerstaff in 2001 to earn first team All ASC in Volleyball. She also easily earned first team All ASC West as was among the ASC's top producers in attack percentage, kills and blocks. Senior Brittany Alvillar earned second team All ASC West for her strong defensive season. Second year head coach Phillip White was named ASC West Division Co-Coach of the Year in nearly leading Schreiner into the ASC playoffs. SU came up one game short but still had one of its finest seasons, finishing 11-7 in the conference. White is only the second Mountaineer coach (Paul Hayes, Men's Soccer) to be named coach of the year since 2001.

WOMEN'S SOCCER: four SU players earned honorable mention All-ASC this fall. Senior Kathryn Fondon, junior Danni Gomez and freshmen Genevieve Monroe and Haley Powers all were recognized by their peers for their work this fall. Fondon, Powers and Monroe anchored a surprisingly strong SU defense which allowed barely half the total number of goals as next best SU team in the past six years (32 total in 17 matches). Monroe recorded three shutouts this fall and was among the ASC's leaders in saves. Gomez scored five goals to easily lead the team in that category.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: lost to NCAA Division I UTSA (2009 NCAA Tournament participant) 86-32 on Saturday. Sophomore Hannah Burleson scored 11 points and tied for the team lead with 4 rebounds against the scholarship Lady Roadrunner squad. Schreiner scored the game's opening point on a free throw by freshman Jasmine Copeland but UTSA answered with an 17-0 run.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Schreiner fell behind 46-20 at University of Dallas and couldn't recover in the second half in a 85-64 road loss. Junior David Flannery scored 15 for SU and pulled down 5 rebounds. Sophomore Colton Kemp scored 11 and junior Riley Battle added 10.
