Mountaineer Update

from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
September 17, 2009

Despite the rain (which was needed) and cancelations (which weren't), there was still a good bit of action last week involving SU teams. A big "thank you" to all the fans who've come out to support the SU Volleyball team in it's first two matches. What a great atmosphere for a college match. Our fans made a big impression on our visiting teams - much to their frustration :). Great support, great sportsmanship and a huge boost to our team. Again, thank you. Hope you can make it out to the soccer matches AND volleyball this weekend. See below for more information on our home events. Here's a quick rundown on what took place last week and the week ahead.

VOLLEYBALL: went 5-1 over the past nine days. The Mountaineers have played a lot of matches over a short period of time - and have had great success. SU won it's first two ASC matches - in the friendly (to the home team) confines of Edington Gym and also won three of four matches at the Hendrix Classic last weekend. SU is greating spirited play from an increasingly impressive group of freshmen but also strong leadership from it's seven returners. Junior Caitlin Gayle's 13 kills led SU in the win over CTX on Tuesday, followed by nine by senior Tiffany Miller, 8 by senior Misty Fletcher and 8 by freshman Jordan Milberger. Fletcher led in digs with 19 followed by senior Brittany Alvillar's 17 and Milberger's 15. Junior Lauren Tharp and sophomore Audra Burnap combined for 41 assists.

WOMEN'S GOLF: the Mountaineers started 2009-10 just like they finished 2008-09 - with an impressive performance. SU shot the second-best team total (337) in school history in sloppy, soaked conditions to finish third at the UT-Tyler Invitational. Schreiner beat two of the four junior college (scholarship programs) in the field and was first among the three D-III schools (including the defending champions and preseason pick in the ASC). Junior Liz Calderon shot her collegiate best round of 80 to finish fifth overall while sophomore Sarah Stillwell was sixth with her second-best collegiate round of 82. Freshmen Gabby Rosales (86), Ashley Hernandez (89) and Katlynd Imbody (96) had solid starts in their first collegiate tournament. Calderon and Stillwell were named to the All-Tournament team.

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY: The Mountaineers battled a saturated course and soggy conditions but still had strong performances by two freshmen runners. Amanda Mendoza had the best time and finish for any runner in SU history with a 25:50 and 7th place finish at the McMurry Invitational. Lauren Saunders would also have broken the school-record with a time of 28:28 and finished in 18th place. Another freshman, Kimberly Gotelli finished 30th and sophomore Genevieve Castillo 33rd in the field after solid results. The fifth Schreiner runner, freshman Katherine McDaniel, had a pre-existing injury which forced her to withdraw during the race so no team result was possible. It was the first event for new head coach, Lorin Sanchez-Neslony.

MEN'S GOLF: Junior Jay Chapman finished ninth overall after shooting a 73 (+1) in the rain-shortened UT-Tyler Invitational. As a team, the Mountaineers didn't fare quite as well, shooting a 313 to finish 10th in a field that featured more junior college teams than D-III schools. Senior Kyle Grona and sophomore Jared Cornish each shot 80 and were joined by freshman Remington Maddux, who was playing his first collegiate event. Sophomore Mark Salazar shot 89.
