Mountaineer Update

from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
September 25, 2009

It will be another busy weekend for Schreiner teams. Everyone will be on the road this weekend, in different parts of the state. As you'll see below, Volleyball completed a successful homestand and now is on the road for the next month. Thanks to all of you who came out and supported the Volleyball and Soccer teams last weekend. Schreiner pride was abundant and created a very fun atmosphere for our players.

Here's a quick recap of events:

VOLLEYBALL: went 3-0 over the past week and a half. Defeated two ASC opponents (Concordia & Howard Payne) as well as an NAIA scholarship team, Huston-Tillotson. All the matches were at Edington in front of boisterous crowds. Tiffany Miller leads the team in kills and Caitlin Gayle in hitting percentage. The duo share the lead in blocks and blocks/game. Brittany Alvillar is the team leader in digs and Audra Burnap leads in assists. The Mountaineers begin their road schedule this weekend with two big matches in Abilene.

MEN'S SOCCER: went 1-1 last week. The team split a pair of double overtime matches at home last weekend in front of great crowds. On Friday, Schreiner defeated Howard Payne on sophomore Philip Anderson's goal 41 seconds into the second overtime. On Saturday, the roles were reversed as UMHB got a goal with less than 3-1/2 minutes before the game would have been declared a tie. The Mountaineers play at TLU today and then go out of conference Saturday in Austin.

WOMEN'S SOCCER: went 0-2 last week. There is no question that Schreiner Women's Soccer is rapidly improving. The latest proof was last weekend when SU had 0-0 ties with two ASC playoff teams (in 2008) well into the second half of each match before the road team scored and went on to victory. In the match against HPU, the lone goal of the match came with less than 15 minutes remaining in regulation in a 1-0 loss. Against UMHB the next day, the took until the 65th minute for the Lady Cru to score and that deflated the Mountaineers as UMHB took advantage in a 4-0 loss.

MEN'S TENNIS: played much better at the ASC Individual Championships this year than last year's performance. While the doubles teams had a rough time, SU had much more success in singles action. Junior Tory Manchester went to the semis in the main draw in flight 5 singles before losing, while freshman Parker Wells won the consolation bracket championship in flight 6.

WOMEN'S TENNIS: Junior Michelle Martinez was the standout performer for the gals at the ASC Individual Championships as she advanced to the finals of the consolation bracket.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY: Schreiner finished 7th at the Ricardo Romo Invitational at UTSA. Sophomore Dionel Alves again led the way followed by the brother combination of Ryan (junior) and Michael (sophomore) Maia.

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY: Freshman Amanda Mendoza continues to impress as she finished 14th overall in a strong field of runner. Her time of 21:11 in her first 5k is a school-best. Another freshmen, Kathrine McDaniel also had a solid performance for the Mountaineers, who are struggling with injury and illness to runners and coach.
