Mountaineer Update

from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
September 9, 2009

Hi and Welcome (Back) for Fall, 2009. We think this is going to be an exciting and successful year across campus, including in our world of Athletics.

On roughly a weekly basis, I will send out an update from our department on the activities of our sports teams. Usually this includes a quick recap of any action that took place in the week prior. Also included is a schedule of upcoming events in the next week. We encourage everyone to come out to any and all Schreiner sports team events. Admission is always free for students, faculty and staff and your support of our student-athletes is greatly appreciated. We think you'll really enjoy watching our teams and student-athletes compete. The first home event of the year is tonight as our Volleyball team hosts Howard Payne at Edington Gym at 7:00 pm.

Here's a quick look back at last week's action:

WOMEN'S SOCCER: went 1-1 last week. Crushed Dallas Christian, 9-0, and lost at NAIA (scholarship) #22-ranked Texas Wesleyan, 1-0. The Mountaineers had a strong weekend. SU walloped DCU as nine different SU players scored in the contest. Two goalkeepers (Genna Moore and Chelsea "Popcorn" Gibson) combined on the shutout. As impressive as that result was, the TWU result was probably even more impressive. The nationally-ranked TWU squad had the statistical advantage but SU had chances and just about held their own. The results give Schreiner confidence going into the home opener this Thursday afternoon. SU is 1-2 on the season - all non-conference matches.

MEN'S SOCCER: went 1-1 last week. Like the women's team, the SU men also had a shutout win over Dallas Christian (3-0) and fell at NAIA scholarship TWU (1-3). Schreiner played complete matches in both cases and fared very well statistically against TWU. Two early goals for the home team were the difference as Schreiner could not recover. Early in the second half, SU cut the lead to 2-1 on a goal by sophomore Phillip Anderson, but TWU answered late in the contest. The Mountaineers have more non-conference action on the road this weekend.

VOLLEYBALL: SU went 1-3 at the prestigious Boxer Kickoff Classic in Portland, OR last weekend. Schreiner was very competitive in the field of ranked and nationally-prominent programs. Although Schreiner lost its first three matches, the game scores were almost always very close. SU lost to host Pacific University, 3-0, on the first night of the tournament. Playing three matches on the second day, SU lost to both Central University and Wartburg University by 3-1 scores. Fighting off fatigue, the Mountaineers powered past Willamette College in their final match by a decisive 3-0 score. As mentioned, SU starts its home and ASC seasons tonight.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY: Schreiner's men's team ran at the Texas State Invitational in San Marcos this weekend. As the only D-III program in the field, SU finished 7th. The event was won by the University of Texas. Sophomore Dionel Alves was SU's top finisher in 40th place with a time of 30:48. Junior Michael Maia was second for SU in 34:08 followed by freshman Ben O'Neill, sophomore Ryan Maia and freshmen Jonathan Ferguson.
