We're now in the final days of the spring season. As expected, the SU Men's and Women's Golf teams each have officially qualified for next week's ASC Championship Tournament in Marble Falls next Monday and Tuesday.
Most of this weekend's contests are away from campus, but there are plenty of Recall events going on for those still on campus. Next weekend, it will be Senior Day for both Schreiner Baseball and SU Softball. Here's a quick rundown of the scores of the past week and a look ahead at the rest of the regular season for our spring sports teams.
SOFTBALL: went 4-0 in dominating Sul Ross State. Schreiner won by a combined score of 39-1 in the four game series. Both sophomore Becca Hay and freshman Ally Morris were a perfect 2-0 on the mound. At the plate, Hay also was solid, going 7-for-13 and scoring five runs. Freshman Callie Caesar was 6-for-12 with 5 RBI and five runs scored. Junior Reina Perez drove in six runs over the four games. She was one of three Mountaineers with four hits (sophomore Rachele Herzog and freshman Kelsey Ambrose were the others). Ambrose also drove in 5 RBI. With the wins, the Mountaineers vaulted all the way to fourth in the ASC West with a 6-8 record. The team is still mathematically alive for a postseason berth but trails CTX by five games with 8 remaining.
MEN'S TENNIS: went 2-1 last week. Lost to McMurry, 0-9, beat Sul Ross State, 9-0 and beat University of the Southwest, 7-2, in non-conference action. Against SRSU, the Mountaineers (2-4 in ASC) were dominant, not dropping a set in any match. Sophomore Trey Hernandez romped at #3 singles, 6-0, 6-0. Senior Ben Jackson and freshman Michael Streeter also rolled at #1 and #2 singles. Hernandez was nearly as dominant vs. University of the Southwest, losing only two games in that match. Streeter also cruised to an easy win, 6-2, 6-1. The Mountaineers have completed their conference schedule and finished 5th in the ASC West.
WOMEN'S GOLF: finished 5th out of seven teams at the LeTourneau Spring Classic earlier this week. The Mountaineers were in fifth after a disappointing first round (345). Despite shooting the day's best team score on day #2 (329), SU couldn't move up in the final rankings. Sophomore Sarah Stillwell again was the team's low scorer. She finished 10th individually after shooting 81-83. Freshman Gabby Rosales continued her strong spring season, finishing one stroke behind and in 13th place. Freshman Simone Date, playing for the first time as a member of the varsity team, shot 39 on her final nine holes and 83 on the second day, to easily post personal bests in both areas.
BASEBALL: went 1-3 last week, beating TLU, 6-5, in 11 innings, then dropping both games of a doubleheader by 0-1 and 6-13 scores, and lost to Trinity, 4-16. In the first game, Schreiner rallied from a 5-3 deficit with single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to tie the score. In the 11th, J.D. Escobar's single drove in pinch-runner Austin Loza with the game winning run. Junior J.P. Garcia pitched another outstanding game but TLU's Jeremiah Steinert was even better in the 1-0 contest. The Mountaineers are 3-12 in ASC West play and are currently 8th with one weekend to play.
WOMEN'S TENNIS: went 0-3 last week, losing to McMurry, 2-7, Sul Ross State, 4-5, and to University of the Southwest, 3-6. SU finishes the ASC season at 1-5 and in sixth place in the ASC West. Junior Michelle Martinez posted both wins vs. McMurry. Against SRSU, Schreiner took a 2-1 lead after doubles action as sophomore Lynne Collenback and freshman Kelley Spahn won at #2 doubles. Spahn also won her singles match at #4. Martinez bounced back for a pair of wins against Southwest and Spahn registered the final point again in singles.
