Mountaineer Update

from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
April 6, 2010

It seems that our spring teams have spent most of the season away from campus. That changes this weekend as Softball and Baseball host four and three games series on Friday and Saturday and Men's and Women's Tennis host a Friday morning match before going to Alpine on Tuesday. The spring season is winding down quickly as is the academic year. If you have time, come out on Friday and Saturday and watch your Schreiner teams in action.

MEN'S TENNIS: won its only match, 9-0, vs. Central Christian. It was a pretty easy win for the Mountaineers (5-6). All six SU singles matches were won in straight sets. No SU doubles team was challenged more than 8-3. Particularly impressive were senior Ben Jackson at #1 singles (6-0, 6-1), freshmen Derek McClintock at #5 (6-0, 6-2) and Alex Hammond at #6 (6-1, 6-1) and junior Tory Manchester at #3 (6-1, 6-2). The Mountaineers now return to ASC action at 1-3 looking to move up from their current 5th place standing in the ASC West.

WOMEN'S TENNIS: won its only match, 9-0, vs. Central Christian. The SU women won even easier than the men, cruising in all their matches. Sophomore Lynne Collenback outclassed her opponent at #3 singles in a 6-0, 6-0 win. Freshman Cristina Carrasco (#4) and Lindsay Fox (#5) were nearly as dominant, only losing one game each in their respective singles matches. SU (2-9, 1-3 in ASC West) also looks to move up in the conference rankings as the team currently is in sixth place.

WOMEN'S GOLF: the SU women, after moving up to its highest ranking in the program's history (27th) earlier in the week, beat defending ASC champion UT-Tyler in a match at Horseshoe Bay last Saturday, 337-351. The course is the same one that the 2010 ASC Championship will be played on in two weeks so this was a tuneup match against one of the ASC favorites for the team title. Sophomore Sarah Stillwell was the match's low scorer with a 78. Freshman Gabby Rosales tied for second low score with an 83. Junior Liz Calderon and senior Surraya Minhas overcame rough opening nines with 88 each. Unlike UTT, Schreiner's players had never seen the course before Saturday's match.

MEN'S GOLF: the men, facing a top 10 team (and heavy ASC Tournament favorite) in UT-Tyler at Horseshoe Bay, did not fare quite as well and lost 299-316. Like the SU women, the guys had never seen the Ram Rock course, rated #3 toughest in the state of Texas - while most of the UTT players had. Still, sophomore Jared Cornish continued his strong spring run with a team-low score of 76, followed by fellow sophomore Will Ramon at 78 and freshman Kelby Ruiz at 80. Senior Kyle Grona shot 82.

BASEBALL: went 1-2 against Mary Hardin-Baylor. Schreiner won the series' first game, behind junior J.P. Garcia's great pitching, 2-0, but lost the two next games, 6-2 and 9-6. Garcia was the story in the opener, going the entire seven innings, allowing only three hits and striking out four. Sophomore Marcus Myhaver continued to swing the bat well, pounding out six more hits in the series. Freshman Curt Jaeger had four hits in nine at-bats, while sophomore Brad Thomas, senior Joe Pena, freshman Pete Trevino and sophomore Jesse Parades each had three.
