Mountaineer Update

from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
February 25, 2010

As you can see from the updates, we had a lot going on in the past week or so. The basketball teams finished their respective seasons and softball started its season. Baseball and both tennis teams hit their second week of competition. The only teams not yet to start this spring, men's and women's golf, will do so next Monday and Tuesday at Comanche Trace with the 2nd Annual Schreiner Spring Shootout.

Here's a look back at last week and a schedule of the upcoming events:

SOFTBALL - went 1-1 last week. Split a doubleheader at Trinity, winning the first game, 5-4, and losing the second by the same score. Sophomore Becca Hay pitched and hit the team to victory in game one. She went all seven innings to get the win and had two hits to pace SU. The Mountaineers (1-1) took the lead in the fourth inning with three runs, added two more in the fifth and held off a late Tiger rally. In the second game, freshman Allyson Morris threw a complete game. SU took a late lead, 4-3, paced by two hits by senior Lindsay Rutkowski, but errors cost the team as TU scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to get the win.

MEN'S BASKETBALL - went 1-1 last week. Lost at Hardin-Simmons and defeated McMurry, 64-62 in the season finale. Schreiner played some of its best basketball of the year in the second half against McM. Down by 12 points on the road at halftime, SU rallied behind the play of junior Riley Battle (20 pts), sophomore Trevor Conner (17, 9 reb) and freshman Mark Hopkins (12). The game was tied late, but a jumper by sophomore Tyrie Prince was the difference with :03 left.

MEN'S TENNIS - went 0-2 last week. Lost 6-3 at UMHB and 7-2 vs. Southwestern. In the UMHB match, freshman Michael Streeter and senior Ben Jackson teamed at #1 doubles for a win, as did Jackson at #1 singles and sophomore Trey Hernandez at #3 singles. Against the Pirates, Hernandez and junior Tory Manchester won at #3 doubles and freshman Derek McClintock won at #6 singles.

BASEBALL - lost three tough games at ETBU. Lost the first game 6-5, then lost a doubleheader by 9-7 and 15-12 scores. In the first game, Schreiner scored a run in the top of the ninth to tie the game, but ETBU got an unearned run in the bottom of the ninth to win. In the second game, SU scored first, fell behind and rallied late but couldn't overcome the deficit. In the finale, SU took an early 9-1 lead but couldn't hold on for the win. Junior J.P. Garcia continues to lead the team in batting at .417.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL - lost both games at HSU and at McM. Despite having no seniors and several late season injuries to key contributors, the Mountaineers battled to the end this year. Despite a short slump a couple of weeks ago which dropped the team down a bit, SU still finished in the upper half of the conference in team defense. With a year of experience under their belts and a strong recruiting class, SU should move up next year.

WOMEN'S TENNIS - lost both matches last week, 9-0 at UMHB and 8-1 vs. Southwestern. SU's lone win was at #6 singles where Carol Pope won by default.
