Welcome back and Happy 2010!

The Schreiner Basketball teams have been busy during the break and have a three-game homestand coming up, starting tomorrow night. We hope that you come out and support both teams and help them get off to a good start in the new year. Reminder, that games are free for SU students, faculty and staff. Here's a quick rundown of both teams to date and a schedule of upcoming games.

MEN'S BASKETBALL - went 2-2 in 2010 so far. Schreiner started the new year with back-to-back wins over TLU and Ozarks, both in Edington Gym. In the TLU win, senior Aaron Hamilton scored seven points down the stretch and a big three-pointer by Colton Kemp brought SU back for the four point come-from-behind win. Against Ozarks, sophomore Trevor Conner's game winner at the buzzer was the difference in a two-point win. Schreiner has suffered back-to-back loses to top-ranked UT-Dallas and at TLU. Last night, SU was undone by 33 turnovers as the Bulldogs rallied to take the win. Hamilton is the Mountaineers' leading scorer at just under 13 ppg, followed by Conner and junior Riley Battle.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL - SU is looking for its first win this year. Despite having one of the ASC's top defenses, Schreiner is having trouble at the offensive end. That has been a consistent theme this winter. The defense has kept the Mountaineers in most games, but this young team is having difficulties making baskets. In their last two home games, SU shot 10% and 9% from the field in the first half. SU played much better in the second half of each game but couldn't overcome the first-half deficit. Currently, Schreiner is fifth in the 15-team ASC in scoring defense at just over 61 ppg. The four teams ahead of Schreiner are the four best teams in the conference. New coach Matt Wallis has the team buying into his defense-first philosophy. Once the offense gets going again, SU should be ready to jump into the win column.
