The spring sports are getting under way, despite Mother Nature's contrary attitude. The first event is this Saturday when Baseball hosts it's annual Alumni Game. The festivities start tomorrow at 11 am with a Home Run Contest and the actual game begins at 1:00 pm at the newly renovated Mountaineer Field. The program will also be recognizing members of the 2000 ASC Championship team.
Here's a quick rundown of the basketball programs the past week and a schedule of the week:
MEN'S BASKETBALL - went 0-3 last week. The Mountaineers are in a rough patch right now, having lost four straight. Fortunately, the ASC West is not as strong as in the past and the Mountaineers still could rally to make the ASC Tournament with a strong finish. Saturday the team travels to Alpine to play Sul Ross State before returning home for two games next week.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL - went 0-3 last week. SU played strong defense, it's trademark, holding #25 ranked Howard Payne to just 58 points in a road loss. The Mountaineers hope to get leading scorer Hannah Burleson back in the near future. They too play at Sul Ross State and are home for two games next week.
Also, next week is Schreiner's opportunity to participate in the Make Change for Change. Schreiner fans are encouraged to bring loose change and drop it in the bucket at any of the games next week. The money will go towards Phil's Friends, a charitable agency to help Cancer victims. Last year, SU raised over $900 in its campaign, sponsored by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee:
