Mountaineer Update

from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
March 11, 2010

The weekend heading into Spring Break will be busy for SU teams. Spring Break itself will be more of the same as Baseball, Softball and both Golf teams will all be in action over the coming 10 days. For BB and SB, this weekend begins the "real" season as both teams begin ASC West Division play - on the road. ASC West games factor into post-season opportunities so these are the games that matter. The action includes a home Men's Tennis match tomorrow at Cree Tennis Complex as the Mountaineers host UMass-Boston at 11:00 am.

Here's a look at last week's action and a schedule of upcoming events:

MEN'S TENNIS: went 0-2 last week, losing it's match 3-6 to visiting Hardin-Simmons and 0-9 against nationally-ranked Trinity. The HSU match was promising because SU lost 0-9 last year so improvement was evident and HSU should contend for the ASC title again in 2010. Senior Ben Jackson and freshman Michael Streeter got a close win, 9-8 (7-5) at #1 doubles to get SU on top early. Down 2-1 after doubles play, Streeter and sophomore Trey Hernandez got SU back into the match with impressive wins at #2 and #3 singles action respectively but the Mountaineers (1-2 in ASC) could get no closer.

SOFTBALL: went 1-5 last week, losing four games (three against top-14 teams) at the ASC First Pitch and splitting a pair of games last night against Trinity. SU won the home opener 10-2 in six innings and lost the second game 13-6. Errors were costly as SU committed 11 in last night's doubleheader. Sophomore Becca Hay ended up throwing both games. In the first, she shut down TU and SU scored six runs in the first to give her plenty of offensive support. In the second game, Hay relieved freshman starter Allyson Morris after the SU defense committed four first-inning errors and four runs crossed the plate (3 unearned) and went the next seven innings. Junior Marla Jendrusch hit the first home run in the new Schreiner Softball Stadium. Senior Lindsay Rutkowski and freshman Callie Caesar each had three hits yesterday and sophomore Rachele Herzog scored five runs.

BASEBALL: went 1-4 last week, losing all three of its games to nationally-ranked Mississippi College and splitting a pair of games with visiting DeSales yesterday. SU lost the first game 7-3, then won the second 3-1. Junior J.P. Garcia was the star in the win, going the entire seven innings allowing just one run. He scatttered eight hits and struck out four without a walk. Garcia gave up a run in the first inning and then shut the door on DeSales, giving up just five hits in his final six innings. Freshman Chase Valdez's home run off the new SU Baseball scoreboard put the Mountaineers ahead to stay. Valdez had two hits in the game as did sophomore Marcus Myhaver.

WOMEN'S TENNIS: went 0-2 last week, losing 0-9 to both Hardin-Simmons and nationally-ranked Trinity.
