Mountaineer Update

from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
March 26, 2010

We are entering the final stretch for the spring season and 2009-10 year. From this point on, just about every spring sports contest is vs. a conference opponent so the stakes are much higher. The SU Men's and Women's Tennis teams return to action after taking Spring Break off and have a home match today vs. Howard Payne at the Cree Tennis Complex. SU Baseball and Softball are on the road this weekend. Even the Schreiner fall sports teams are now in action in their "non-traditional" seasons. The SU Men's Golf team travels to Richardson, TX on Sunday for their next tournament.

Here's a quick recap of the action from last week and a schedule for the next week:

SOFTBALL: went 3-3 in Arizona on their annual Spring Break trip. Beat Minnesota-Morris, 14-0, lost to Wisconsin-LaCrosse (4-5), beat St. Scholastica (2-1), lost to Dickinson (0-4), beat Ancilla Junior College and lost to Wisconsin-LaCrosse again, 2-5. Freshman Kelsey Ambrose had the best trip, offensively, with seven hits, followed by senior Lindsay Rutkowski with 5 and sophomores Ashly Bouthout and Rachele Herzog with four each.

BASEBALL: went 1-4 last week. Beat Hardin-Simmons, 6-1, and then lost a pair of doubleheaders to HSU and Southwestern. The big story of the week was the pitching of freshman starter Barrett Houser vs. Hardin-Simmons. Houser was outstanding in shutting down HSU. He went 7-2/3 innings, scattering six hits, striking out six and walking just one while allowing a lone earned run. Sophomore Brad Thomas had two hits and senior Eric Crenwelge drove in two runs and that was plenty of offense for Houser and senior reliever Eric Wehmeyer. Wehmeyer was strong as well, pitching the final 1-1/3 innings and allowing just one hit to preserve SU's first ASC West win of the season. Sophomore Marcus Myhaver continued his hitting tear, racking up 8 hits in the five games. Senior Justin Garza and Thomas each had seven while freshman Chase Valdez got six hits.
