Mountaineer Update

from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
March 4, 2010

It was a great week for the Schreiner Men's Tennis team and both SU Golf teams. The MT team went undefeated in four matches while the Schreiner Golf teams each finished second (among D-III schools) at the Schreiner Spring Shootout and only were beaten by two teams that are ranked #14 and #16 in the nation respectively.

Sophomore Trey Hernandez was named ASC Men's Tennis Player of the Week for his efforts. Junior Jay Chapman became the first SU Golfer in many years to be the individual medalist for a tournament by shooting 75-77 in very challenging conditions to claim the top spot and has been nominated for ASC Golfer of the Week. Senior Surraya Minhas finished fourth in the women's tournament and also has been nominated for player of the week. This week will be busy on campus as SU Baseball hosts possibly the best team in the ASC East, Mississippi College, for a three game set. Game times have been changed (due to projected weather forecasts) so refer below. SU Softball has about as tough a weekend as can be imagined at the ASC First Pitch Tournament in Dallas. They face three of the top 14 teams in the nation in two days of action. Here's a quick rundown of last week's action and a look at the schedule over the next week.

MEN'S TENNIS: went 3-0-1 last week. Tied UT-Dallas, 3-3, beat Austin College (8-1), Ozarks (8-1) and Texas Lutheran (6-3). Coach Garry Nadebaum's team is making strong strides, evidenced in particular by the UTD and TLU results. Last year, both teams beat SU, 9-0. Hernandez was a perfect 7-0 in singles and doubles over the four matches. Freshman Michael Streeter and junior Tory Manchester were nearly perfect with 7-1 and 6-1 records respectively. The Mountaineers (3-3-1, 1-1 in ASC) face the best team in the ASC West Friday here at the Cree Tennis Complex when they play Hardin-Simmons at 2:00 pm.

WOMEN'S GOLF: came in second at the Schreiner Spring Shootout. Despite tough conditions, particularly in the first round, SU can in second out of eight schools. The tournament was won by nationally-ranked Southwestern, but SU was well ahead of the third place team and was first out of the four ASC schools in the field. Senior Surraya Minhas finished fourth which was particularly impressive since she almost had to withdraw prior to the first round with a stomach virus. Junior Liz Calderon and sophomore Sarah Stillwell finished in a tie for ninth place. The Mountaineers continue to be a primary contender for an ASC title later this spring.

MEN'S GOLF: came in fourth at the SSS. #16-ranked UT-Tyler won the event, and NCAA D-II UT-Brownsville was second. NAIA scholarship program Our Lady of the Lake edged SU for third. SU finished second out of the six ASC teams in the field. Chapman continued his outstanding year, with another top finish. This was his first medalist title and the first by an SU golfer in quite a few years. Senior Kyle Grona tied for 10th place. The Mountaineers are steadily climbing up through the ASC ranks and showed that they belong with the ASC's upper tier teams.

WOMEN'S TENNIS: went 1-3 last week. The SU women broke through with a big win at TLU on Tuesday, winning 7-2. The win snapped a nine-match streak dating back to last year. The Mountaineers (1-6, 1-1 in ASC) went 2-1 in doubles and then won the singles matches at 1-4 to clinch the win. Freshman Kelley Spahn was nominated for ASC Player of the Week after going 5-1 in her matches. She just joined the team last week after completing her freshman season for the SU Women's Basketball team.

BASEBALL: went 0-3 last week, losing all three games at UT-Dallas. Errors were the biggest culprits as the Mountaineers committed 12 in the series. UTD gave up 35 runs over three games. The Mountaineers are off to a slow start and are struggling in both pitching and hitting, being last in the ASC in both categories. The good news is that all the game have been non-conference so the games that matter are all coming up and the season can turn around quickly.

BASEBALL (dh) vs. Mississippi (Mountaineer Field) at Noon
