Fall has concluded and winter, at least in terms of our sports seasons, is here. That means basketball in underway, or will be shortly in the case of our women's team. First off, congratulations to all of our student-athletes who earned All-ASC honors for their fall seasons. A recap of the awards are below. As for basketball, this will be a busy and big weekend for both teams. They each travel to Dallas for the beginning of American Southwest Conference play and then return home on Sunday for their respective home openers against Southwestern University. Both teams could use the support of the Schreiner community on Sunday so come on out and cheer on your 2010-11 Mountaineers.
MEN'S BASKETBALL: for the first time since 1992, Schreiner defeated Trinity, 78-66, in San Antonio. SU dominated second half action, and led by as many as 22 points before a late Tiger rally. Freshman Darren Smith led the SU attack with 19 points and five assists. Senior Riley Battle scored 14 off the bench and pulled down six rebounds. Senior Charles Hobbs and junior Tyrie Prince each score 13 with 5 boards and freshman Mike Huddleston added 10 points. Sophomore Manny Longoria dished out 7 assists. 10 players played at least 14 minutes in the balanced Schreiner effort.
VOLLEYBALL: Senior middle blocker Caitlin Gayle became the second straight SU player (Tiffany Miller won the award in 2009) to earn First Team All-ASC.
WOMEN'S SOCCER: Four SU sophomores each earned honorable mention All-ASC. Goalkeeper Genna Monroe and center back Haley Powers each won the award for the second straight year and forward Amanda Moon and center midfielder Lacey Warner each won the award for the first time.
MEN'S SOCCER: Senior defender Derek Brosky was named first team All-ASC. Senior forward Stephen Gonzalez, and junior forwards Taylor Bontz and Philip Anderson each were named to the All-ASC second team, and sophomore long throw specialist and defender Josh Vela earned third team recognition. Junior defender Lee Bosserman made the honorable mention All-ASC squad.
Congratulations to all Schreiner's All-ASC performers for this past fall.
