First of all, Happy Thanksgiving to the entire Schreiner community. We hope you have a safe holiday with family and friends. Now, on to the sports report. Last week was nearly perfect for the SU Men's Basketball team. After posting their first win over Trinity in 18 years in the opening game, last weekend saw the Mountaineers travel to Dallas to easily defeat then 17th-ranked UT-Dallas in their American Southwest Conference opener. Just over 24 hours later, it took 50 minutes (two overtimes) and a basket with less than six seconds remaining for visiting Southwestern to edge SU in our home opener. Still, it's been a strong start to the season for the SU men.
Here's a quick look back at last weekend's games and a schedule for the next week.
MEN'S BASKETBALL: went 1-1 last weekend. Beat 17th-ranked UT-Dallas, 75-65, lost in double overtime to Southwestern, 104-103. Freshman Darren Smith scored 19 points and senior Riley Battle added 14 in the win at UTD. The Mountaineers had a 3 point lead at halftime, but dominated the second half and led by as many as 19 points late in the contest. Against the Pirates, SU fell behind quickly and trailed by 12 at halftime. It took less than five minutes into the second half for Schreiner to erase the deficit and take a three point lead. With SU down by three in the closing seconds of regulation, Smith hit a 3-pointer to send the game in the first OT. Southwestern's Nick Caputo hit a basket at the end of the first overtime to send it to another extra period. SU led by one but a late basket was the difference. Smith led SU with 28 points before fouling out. Battle had 23 and junior Tyrie Prince added 21.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: went 0-2 last week. Lost at UT-Dallas, 63-44, and lost to Southwestern, 69-55. The Mountaineers faced two top programs last weekend. Against UTD, SU was undone by 17 first half turnovers and fell behind by a large margin at halftime. Against Southwestern, the Mountaineers again trailed by double digits at halftime but did a much better job protecting the basketball. Freshman Julissa Garrett scored 16 points in her first collegiate game to lead the SU effort against UTD. Junior Lia Phillips scored 15 and Garrett 14 to lead the Mountaineer attack against Southwestern.
