Mountaineer Update

from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
November 30, 2010

Our basketball teams just conclude one long road trip and then head back out next week for another. In between, we have a home game this Thursday with the women's contest at 5:30 followed by the men's contest at 7:30. Both teams take on ETBU at Edington and we hope that you can come out and welcome back your Mountaineers!

Here's a quick look back at the action from this past week:

MEN'S BASKETBALL: went 0-2 last week. Lost at Louisiana College 84-79 and lost at Mississippi College, 85-80. Two similar scores but very different games. In the LC contest, Schreiner took a seven point lead going into the game's final minutes but the home team rallied behind 11-for-11 shooting from the free-throw line. Against MC, the Choctaws took a big second half lead and saw SU mount a furious comeback in the final nine minutes. SU had a chance to tie the game in the final minute but MC pulled away behind free throws again. In both games, freshman Darren Smith was the scoring leader, averaged 22.5 points per contest. Senior Riley Battle scored 14 against LC but had foul trouble at Mississippi. Senior Mitch Lawrence had possibly his best collegiate game last night, scoring 12 points and pulling down six rebounds. Junior Tyrie Prince scored 15 and grabbed 5 rebounds last night.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: went 0-2 last week. Lost at LC and MC. Despite two tough losses, SU continues to see its young players produce despite a tough early season schedule. Freshman Julissa Garrett (9 points), Bailey Harris and Chelsea Sims were SU's top scorers against LC. Freshman Kristy Guerra (12 points), Garrett and sophomore Colby Adolph were the top scorers vs. MC. Adolph also grabbed 9 rebounds in the LC game. The biggest deterrent to success for the women's team is turnovers. In the first game, SU committed 35 and had an additional 25 against Mississippi. In the first half of the MC contest 17 turnovers led to 27 first half points (out of 38 points scored).
