Mountaineer Update

from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
October 14, 2010

While the soccer teams are away, there will be plenty of action here on campus and locally over the next several days. The big event is the ASC Crossover Tournament. Schreiner hosts it every four years and six teams will be coming to campus on Friday and Saturday for a round robin tournament. For a complete schedule of the teams and matches, click here. Schreiner's matches are listed below in the upcoming schedule. The cost is $5/day and $9 for the two day event, but Schreiner students, faculty and staff get in FREE with your id. The Schreiner golf teams also host their fall tournament at Scott Schreiner golf course next Monday and Tuesday with eight men's and eight women's teams participating. Here's a quick look back at last week and a schedule for the next week:

MEN'S SOCCER: went 1-0-1 last weekend, beating Ozarks, 1-0, and tying UT-Dallas, 1-1. Junior Taylor Bontz scored off a throw-in with just three minutes remaining in the second overtime as Schreiner got by perennial ASC title contender Ozarks, 1-0. Junior Matt Johnson recorded the shutout. On Saturday, SU hosted the current ASC leaders, UT-Dallas. Schreiner scored first as Josh Vela scored off a rebound of Gio Benitez' penalty shot which hit the post. It looked like that slim lead would stand up but UTD scored with two minutes left in regulation. It became obvious that the Mountaineers (4-1-2 in ASC) were wearing down after a double overtime match the day before. At the end of the first overtime, SU had to play the rest of the way with a man down after Vela received a red card. Still they managed the important tie as Johnson again came up huge in the match.

WOMEN'S SOCCER: went 1-1 last weekend. Beat Ozarks, 2-0, and lost to UT-Dallas, 0-5. The Mountaineers (3-4 in ASC) continue to impress and notched their third win, and fifth overall, on Friday. Goals by freshman Alesha Thorpe (her first collegiate goal) and by sophomore Amanda Moon were more than enough for sophomore goalkeeper Genevieve Monroe and her defensive mates. Saturday, playing against one of the strongest teams in the ASC, SU had a rough 12-minute patch in the middle of the first half and couldn't recover. Freshman Lizeth De La Torre filled in for Monroe between and pipes and did an admirable job but the Comets were just too strong.

VOLLEYBALL: went 2-3 last weekend. Won one of four matches at the Leopard Invitational at La Verne University in CA over the weekend, and then bounced back with a 3-0 win over Sul Ross State in Alpine on Tuesday evening. Schreiner is now 6-5 in the ASC West race heading into this weekend. The Mountaineers will face possibly the toughest three teams in the ASC East Division over those two days. During the CA trip and Tuesday's matches, SU got leadership from a number of players, both seniors (Caitlin Gayle, Misty Fletcher and Audra Burnap) and freshmen (Jaemi Groves, Brittney Church, Hallet Dickey, Briahna Logan) which is a good sign for the future.
