Mountaineer Update

from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
October 21, 2010

The end of the fall season must be near because our Senior Day/Night matches are coming up for our fall sports over the next several days. The final home soccer matches are this weekend (as is Parents' Weekend) and the final home Volleyball match is next Tuesday night. Women's Soccer doesn't have any seniors but Men's Soccer has six (Zach Williams, Derek Brosky, Stephen Gonzalez, Jeremy Leoni, Kenny Benson and Juan Bonilla) while Volleyball has four (Holly Howard, Caitlin Gayle, Audra Burnap and Misty Fletcher). Please come out to our Senior Day/Night matches and thank these outstanding student-athletes for their contributions during their athletic careers. Basketball practices started this week, so there will soon be games on the schedule so we can all see our 2010-11 Mountaineer teams.

Here's a quick look back at last week's activities and the schedule for the next week:

WOMEN'S GOLF: finished 2nd out of 8 teams at the Schreiner Fall Classic. The squad again reset the school single day scoring record with a final round 325 but it wasn't enough for the 22nd ranked SU team to reel in 25th-ranked UMHB. Junior Sarah Stillwell set the SU 36-hole scoring record with a pair of 79s and earned third place. Senior Liz Calderon had her best collegiate two day performance, shooting 83-79 to finish sixth. Over the two days of the tournament, Mountaineers shot five sub-80 rounds by four different players. The team is off until February but has once again established that they will be contenders for the 2011 ASC title.

MEN'S SOCCER: went 1-1 last weekend. Beat Louisiana College, 7-0, but lost at Mississippi, 2-0. Goals were scored by sophomore Jorge Ramos, junior Sam Grant, junior Philip Anderson (2), sophomore David Machado, senior Leoni and sophomore Kelan Robinson. Sophomore goalkeeper Tim Martinez recorded the shutout. The Mountaineers are now 5-2-2 and in the thick of the race for an ASC postseason berth. With just four matches remaining, this weekend's matches will go a long way towards determining who's in and who will be left out of the ASC Championship hunt.

WOMEN'S SOCCER: went 1-1 last weekend. Beat Louisiana College, 3-0, but lost to Mississippi, 6-0. 2010 will go down as a breakout year for SU Women's Soccer. Already the team has more total wins (6) and ASC wins (4) than any since 2002. The team also has a chance to equal/surpass the number of wins (total and ASC) as the past three teams had been able to accomplish combined. Against LC, freshman Maggie Rios got the scoring started and was aided by freshman Alesha Thorpe and then Rios got her second goal of the match later on. Sophomore Genevieve Monroe earned yet another shutout win.

VOLLEYBALL: went 2-2. Went 2-1 in the ASC Crossover hosted by SU last weekend. Schreiner played some of its best volleyball seen in Edington by beating ETBU, 3-0, then beat LeTourneau, 3-1 before losing to 21st-ranked UT-Dallas, 3-0. Last night, TLU knocked Schreiner out of ASC postseason consideration with a 3-0 win in Seguin. The Mountaineers continue to have different players step up each and every match. Last night, senior Gayle led the SU attack with 10 kills, while freshman Jaemi Groves was tops in assists and Jamie Burns was the best defensive contributor.

MEN'S GOLF: Schreiner showed more flashes of its potential and fired an opening round 290 to tie for first halfway through the SU Fall Classic. Unfortunately, the team could not sustain that level of play, despite freshman Zach Reichenau's final round 69 (-1) and slipped to fourth place out of eight teams. Reichenau tied for sixth place overall (144). Sophomore Kelby Ruiz tied his collegiate best round with a 71 in the opening round and finished tied for 10th after shooting 76 in the final round. Like the women's team, the men are now off until February.
