Mountaineer Update

from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
October 6, 2010

Now that the weather has changed, the conference races heat up in our fall sports. Volleyball takes a trip out of conference this weekend while the Men's and Women's Soccer teams host a pair of important ASC contests here on campus this Friday and Saturday. The cross country teams have the weekend off and the basketball teams are just over a week away from their first practice. Here's a quick look back at the past week:

MEN'S SOCCER: went 1-0-1 last weekend. The SU men traveled to UT-Tyler and earned a tough 1-1 tie and then picked up a 1-0 road win at Concordia TX. The Mountaineers broke the scoreless tie in the second half at UTT when junior Rudy Moreno's hit the back of the net. UT-Tyler tied the match just a few minutes later and it stayed that way through regulation and two overtimes. In the CTX match, it was again scoreless in the second half, but sophomore Josh Vela's throw in was redirected into the goal by junior Taylor Bontz for his team-leading 5th goal of the season. The Mountaineers are back in the top half of the conference but don't have a lot of margin for an off day. SU is 3-1-1 in ASC play.

VOLLEYBALL: went 2-2 at the first ASC Crossover and one home match yesterday. Beat UMHB, 3-0, lost to host Mississippi College, 0-3, lost to UT-Tyler, 2-3. Then came home and beat Howard Payne for the second time this season, 3-1. SU is 5-5 in ASC contests.

WOMEN'S GOLF: finished in third place at UT-Tyler Invitational. Sophomore Gabby Rosales tied two school records and finished in second place individually after shooting 81-79 but it wasn't enough as SU finished third. Freshman Lucy Rivera helped the team in the opening round and counted with the third best score of the day (for SU) after an 86. Junior Sarah Stillwell matched Rosales with an opening round 81 but shot 88 in the second round. The Mountaineers are now ranked 22nd nationally.

WOMEN'S SOCCER: went 0-2 last week. Lost at UT-Tyler, 0-4 and lost at Concordia, TX, 0-1. Schreiner only trailed 1-0 to always dominant UTT at halftime before three early second half goals put the match away. SU played well at CTX but lost a tough match. SU is 2-3 in ASC.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY: the team competed as the only non-Division I or II team in the field at the Incarnate Word Invitational, yet improved their times on one of the season's most demanding courses. Junior Ryan Maia returned to the team and finished 37th followed closely by junior Tom Pappas in 41st. First year head coach Jerry Dyes likes what he is seeing in the improvement of his team with each race.

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY: with their top two runners out with injuries or other commitments, SU still was well represented at the Incarnate Word Invitational with a very young team. Freshmen Alicea Bonnema and Teresa Gaitan finished 49th and 51st respectively. Junior Genevieve Castillo was the next Mountaineer across the line, followed by sophomore Jule Poindexter and two freshmen; Ilse Ibarra and Cara Pilgrim.

MEN'S GOLF: finished 11th at the UT-Tyler Invitational. A great week turned into disappointment for SU. Earlier in the week, SU earned its first NCAA national ranking ever (13th) for MG but this result cost the team any chance of another top ranking. SU finished 7th out of the 8 ASC schools for the team's worst showing in two years. Sophomore Andy Bell was SU's top finisher after shooting 77-79.
