Mountaineer Update

from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
September 16, 2010

It will be another busy weekend, but now we'll start to have some more home matches so that Schreiner fans can watch our teams compete in person. Volleyball, Men's and Women's Soccer are all in action this weekend and into next week so we encourage you to come out and support your fellow Mountaineers. Each of those teams are now getting into the all-important ASC (conference) matches. The SU Men's and Women's Tennis teams start their fall season today with the ASC Individuals in Tyler, TX. Here's a quick look back at last week:

MEN'S SOCCER: went 2-0-1 last week - all against NAIA scholarship teams. Won at Northwood, 2-1, tied UH-Victoria, 2-2, and beat Huston-Tillotson, 1-0, yesterday. A penalty kick by Kenny Benson and second half goal by junior Taylor Bontz was enough in the win at Northwood. The match against UHV might have been the most impressive in that SU found itself down 2-0 halfway through the opening half and then used goals by Bontz and junior Philip Anderson to rally in the second stanza for the tie. Bontz again was the goal scorer, taking advantage of a goalkeeper error by HTU to score on a wide-open net with just over five minutes remaining in regulation. The Mountaineers are off to their best pre-ASC start ever. Now, with ASC matches starting this weekend, is when the important matches begin.

MEN'S GOLF: finished 4th out of 12 teams at the John Bohmann Memorial. The team set two school records and senior Jay Chapman added two more school records as the Mountaineers overcame a slow start to post 285, 293 in the final two rounds to rally from 10th place. Chapman shot the best round of the tournament, a 5-under par 66, in the second round. Freshman Zach Reichenau, playing in his first collegiate event, tied Chapman for 9th place overall with rounds of 75, 72, 71. Sophomore Andy Bell finished 20th place with 73, 75, 73 scores. Despite being one of the youngest teams in the conference, SU finished behind only two of seven ASC teams in the field and also beat nationally-ranked Trinity.

WOMEN'S SOCCER: went 1-2 last week against 3 scholarship programs. Injuries continue to take a toll on the roster as SU lost at Northwood, 5-0, but beat UH-Victoria, 2-1 and then lost in overtime, 1-0 yesterday. Against UHV, Schreiner rallied from a 1-0 deficity - as it did against Cedar Valley the week before, to score the 2-1 win. With 23 minutes remaining in the match, Desiree Frausto scored the equalizer and then sophomore Veronica Kloss got the game-winner with just 2-1/2 minutes left in the second half. The Mountaineers played another strong defensive effort yesterday against Huston-Tillotson and battled to a 0-0 draw after regulation but gave up a goal one minute into overtime.

VOLLEYBALL: went 0-1 last week, losing it's ASC opener to TLU, 3-1. The Mountaineers started fast and strong, winning the first game 25-20, but the Bulldogs came back to edge SU in game 2, 25-23 and then got a little bit more distance in the final two games to win in four sets. Senior Caitlin Gayle led the way with 16 kills, followed closely by senior Misty Fletcher with 14. Senior Holly Howard had 11 digs. Schreiner was hurt by 14 service errors.

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY: Schreiner finished in 7th place at the McMurry Invitational. Junior Kathryn Adcock was the top performer for SU, finishing the 5k race in 25:00 and was 22nd overall. She was followed by freshmen Teresa Gaitan and Cara Pilgrim and junior Genevieve Castillo all tightly bunched together and freshman Lacey Saunders.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY: Schreiner had only four available runners, so didn't count in the team totals, but it was still a promising start for the Mountaineers. Junior Ryan Maia was Schreiner's top finisher at the McMurry Invitational with a time of 25:03 over the four mile course, good for 24th place. Junior Dionel Alves was next in 34th place at 26:12 followed closely by senior Tom Pappas at 26:40 and freshmen Justin Butler at 27:48.
