Mountaineer Update

from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
September 9, 2010

The SU Men's and Women's Cross Country teams open their 2010 season this weekend with a meet at McMurry on Saturday.. SU's Men's Golf team also opens the 2010-11 campaign Monday and Tuesday in Seguin and our two Tennis teams begin their abbreviated fall schedule next week. The remaining spring sports teams have started their off season programs so there is a lot going on at this time of the year. Most importantly, the Soccer teams start their home schedule this Sunday and Volleyball begins ASC play with it's home opener next Tuesday at Edington. Please come out and support your Schreiner teams this fall. Here's a quick look back at last week's action and the schedule for the next week:

MEN'S SOCCER: went 1-1 last week. Lost at #16 ranked Trinity, 4-1 and beat NCAA Division II UT-Permian Basin, 2-1, in overtime. The first half of the match with Trinity was very competitive. TU scored first but it took Schreiner just 30 seconds to even the score as senior Kenny Benson scored on an assist from junior Taylor Bontz. The Tigers took control on the scoreboard with three second half goals but SU still battled hard and well in the match. Against the scholarship UTPB program, the two teams were scoreless at halftime. UTPB scored first but senior Stephen Gonzalez sent a cross to junior Philip Anderson which Anderson headed into the goal to tie the match. Just three minutes into overtime, sophomore Kelan Robinson scored off a throw in by sophomore Josh Vela to give the Mountaineers the road win. Sophomore Tim Martinez was a standout in goal and saved three point-blank shots that could have ended the match.

WOMEN'S SOCCER: went 1-1 last week. Defeated Cedar Valley Junior College, 2-1, and lost at scholarship UTPB, 10-0. The Mountaineers gave up a soft goal in the first half to CVC and trailed 1-0 with less than 10 minutes remaining in the match. Freshman Alyssa Barrera tied the match on a long shot over the goalkeeper's head with 8 minutes remaining in regulation. Sophomore Becky Chiaro got the game winner with less than three minutes remaining on a loose ball in front of the goal. The match and stats do not count officially because CVC is a two-year school. Against D-II UTPB, Schreiner got a chance to play all it's healthy players and everyone got valuable minutes in advance of the ASC schedule.

VOLLEYBALL: went 1-5 last week. The Mountaineers went up in competition and had a tough time. The win was in the opening match, a thrilling five-setter against fellow ASC member UMHB. SU lost to 16th ranked Southwestern later that day, and went 0-4 at the Millsaps Tournament last weekend. Three of the four teams in the tournament were NAIA scholarship teams. Last night, Schreiner fell to 22nd-ranked Trinity, 3-0, in San Antonio. The Mountaineers now get six days off (from competition) before starting their ASC slate against TLU next Tuesday.
