Mountaineer Update

The spring season is winding down quickly. This weekend is Senior Day for Baseball and the final home games for Softball. Saturday's doubleheader will be the final home games for Oscar Ibieta and Marcus Myhaver who both have had standout careers for our baseball team.

Also, both golf teams qualified for next week's ASC golf championships after runner-up finishes in tournaments this week. Our tennis teams finish up their seasons this weekend as well.

Here's a quick rundown on what took place last week:

WOMEN'S GOLF: finished second at the LeTourneau Spring Classic. SU broke three school records and moved past two scholarship programs in the final round. The 19th-ranked Mountaineers were again led by sophomore Gabby Rosales who earned all-tournament honors with her fourth place finish after shooting 79, 80. Senior Liz Calderon had one of her best collegiate finishes after shooting 83, 80. Junior Sarah Stillwell was right behind with 83, 82 and sophomore Simone Date had another strong performance shooting 86, 84. SU set school records for low first round (331), low round to par (+38) and best two day total (657) while losing only to NAIA Northwood University in the nine team field.

MEN'S GOLF: also finished 2nd at LeTourneau which was the team's best finish this year. Senior Jay Chapman shot 73, 73, 77 to finish third overall. Sophomore Andy Bell shot 75, 76, 77 and earned ninth place as the Mountaineers shot 307, 301 in windy conditions on Monday. Although the weather was much nicer on Tuesday, SU shot 311 but still managed to hold onto second place in the event. This was the highest team finish since the team played in this event two years ago.

SOFTBALL: went 4-0 this weekend over winless Sul Ross State. SU dominated the series to improve to 5-9 in the ASC, outscoring SRSU 34-10 and ending the team's nine game ASC losing skid. Sophomore Callie Caesar went 8-for-12 in the series and junior Reina Perez was 6-for-11 with eight RBI. Junior Becca Hay had six hits as well and won both her starts on the mound.

BASEBALL: went 1-3 last weekend, losing three games at Texas Lutheran and beating #13-ranked Trinity on Tuesday. SU got a solid pitching performance from freshman Daniel Brewer in a 3-2 loss to TLU. A late error was the difference as Brewer gave up 2 earned runs in 7 plus innings of work. A late error also cost SU in a 6-5 loss to TLU in the finale. Schreiner bounced back to knock off Trinity 8-7. Junior Jesse Parades, Ibieta and junior Brad Thomas all had five hits in the four games.
